Do you like the Z4 8-speed automatic?
It strikes me that the automatic transmission of the z4 has a completely different character than other BMWs than I've owned.
It shifts faster, but also at lower revs. It also makes a direct connection faster. As a result, downshifts can be especially choppy. It seems as if the torque converter has been adjusted differently. Even in sport mode, the machine switches between 2 and 3000 rpm. I am curious what you think of the 8-speed automatic transmission in the z4? |

I love it although I miss the 5sp in my old 1989 Mustang GT.

I really like it but I will say the DCT I had in the 335is was better. I miss that kick in the pants shifting experience.

I was surprised that I liked the ZF8 better than the DCT in the 718 Boxster S as I was expecting more from the DCT; instead I found shifting to be very similar but the DCT had an initial slow speed notchiness I didn't care for.

Manuel guy
Yes it is faster more efficient, but as a die hard 3 pedal guy I miss the clutch pedal, it is just more fun to me but since the current trans is our only option I love the car enough to over look what I believe is a deficiency

I've owned a legit manual almost all my life.
I think I've finally come to terms with the fact that my next vehicle is not likely to be a manual. Just too few choices out there. Sadly the manual will go the way of the dinosaur and convertibles won't be far behind.

Last 3 BMW's have been 8ZF & think as a pure transmission its superior to the MT/DCT. Its quicker when you punch it & smoother when in comfort. 8th gear locked out in performance settings gives out standing mileage 31mpg@80mph average door to door on long road trips when available in Comfort. Still hits hard & fast dropping a number of gears when you need to pass at 80+.

This gearbox is excellent, smooth at Comfort Mode, very responsive in Sport Mode. Love it

The ZF is a great auto trans, the programming on the Z4 trans is excellent as well. I loved the DCT in my last E92 M3 but it was not very consistent just driving around normally.
While I would love a manual the ZF was in my old F-type, hellcat challenger, RAM pickups and also the Jeep JT I currently own. Never had a problem with the trans from any of them and I would expect it to last forever in something like a Z4. |

For motorway cruising in comfort mode its beautiful, way more fuel efficient than I expected. In Sport+ its just as good but changes purpose as it stays in high revs so always ready when you put the foot down! Sometimes this car feels N/A and you forget its turbo charged when you really let it fly
