I've always been curious when I see officers riding their motorcycles home, or when I see them riding from a completely different city that is labeled on their vehicles. What is the catch?

I'm not exactly sure what your question is but I'll say this, we often left our jurisdiction on investigations, to execute warrants etc.

What I see a lot and if I was still working I'd be laying lots of charges for are people with their daytime running lights on (required in Canada on all new cars for years now). The headlights are on, and I think often the system has the dash lights on but not the full compliment of marker and tail lights. You'll see someone driving down the road at night with just headlights on and no other lights on the vehicle at all. Pretty dangerous in my view.

What about motorcycles? I have often seen them in what seems as commute vehicles. Not that I'm against it, because I can understand the parking situation, but are they allowed to be used in this manner?

I believe that some jurisdictions in the US require the officer purchase their police vehicle so they use them to commute to and from work. (I'm guessing here). In Canada all of our equipment is provided by the dept. so it stays at work at the end of shift.

I was at a police function that involved both Canadian and US law enforcement and recall talking to a guy from Montana if I recall correctly and I'm sure he said they bought their cars or were assigned a car that was their responsibility to maintain. Heres a newspaper article from Chicago and Florida that sheds some light on your question.

Personally I wouldn't want to be parking a scout car in my driveway, I've heard a rumour that there are people out there who aren't fans of the police.

Motor officers usually take their bikes home, so what you are seeing is officers who live in one jurisdiction, but work in another; you are observing them in transit to and from work. It's not a requirement to take home the bike, but it is an option. It is required that the bike can be garaged/secured however.

The same applies to unmarked take-home cars…..sort of. It's not required to be garaged.

I remember in my old neighborhood in Upstate NY, there was a NY State Trooper constantly parked in a driveway a few houses down from a woman who was recently divorced. She was getting the ‘pork’ I would say and he would only stay for maybe 30 minutes. Lasted a few months IIRC.

Also, this guy (different guy) went to my high school and was a former police officer but got mixed up with an informant sexually and got caught by her BF lol.

Sexin' informants, victims, etc. is generally bad practice. I get the temptation, but it's almost always messy. I have partners doing it now and I shake my head.

The temptation is real. I never crossed the line but it was certainly available a few times.

That's a pet peeve I've had for a long time and I get pissed whenever I see morons driving around with their lights off. Not even just their DRLs on but ALL lights off. How the f*** do they not realize it? Oh and please nail people that drive around with one headlight burned out! That is dangerous (and annoying) too!

I nail inoperable headlights, tail lights, people driving around with only DRL's running, inoperable license plate lights (…usually just to warn and advise and see who's driving the car; it's often gangsters), etc.

It's around $900+ before seeing the magistrate, so the reduced fine is still probably $300-400.

Please do!! I see this soo much lately up here around Sac, it's really surprising how many people can't tell they don't have their lights on. I try to signal to most but they are just clueless.
