I disagree.
The z4 is not an x3.
Everyone that buys a z4 m40i now and for ever will know exactly what they are looking for.
These 2022 models are going to be black listed within the community as inferior models and so much less desirable.

The person that buys an s30 drive buys it for his wife that could care less.
But not on the high end models.

The person that buys an x3 doesn't know or care.
The person that buys an M8 will know exactly which model not to buy.

And on top of it. Why not offer a rain check and to install it later next year?

I would also disagree on better than not having a car.
I sold my car and have no car right now waiting for my new car.
Owning a z4 m40i cost 1k a month. In the mean time I live perfectly fine ubering everywhere for 1k a month. Much cheaper.
Driving one of these car is a pleasure with NO COMPRIMISE. And I am not going to compromise.
If I want to compromise I can go get a Toyota.

People are removing adaptive headlights and premium stereo systems. Jeep is limiting which models and trims can get a V8 engine for MY2022. This is a global crisis. I think we can live without a touch screen for now. Better than not having the car at all!

Question

Just got confirmation that my Z4 m40i is starting production in two weeks. Got VIN and all is green.
Nobody contacted me about missing touchscreen so I assume all is well.
Anyone got communication from BMW asking to give up touchscreen?

Congratulations!

Your best contact point for changes in the build would be your dealer (maybe). My car is now at the port waiting for a vessel assignment, but it seems to be also waiting to have a RAM installed and my dealer has not been getting any updates about my build and the Genius people don't seem to know much more than what you can see on MyBMW.

Thanks! I checked with my dealer and he said everything is ok. Which makes me wonder if this touchscreen delete is really a thing...

I read many people waiting for RAM. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Check your standard features under MyGarage and see if there are any options that start with "Deleted..." that's how you will know if they removed the HUD or touchscreen.

A dealer saying everything is ok is not the same as confirming from the standard features list on MyGarage what options have been deleted or not.

I hope you're right and this it's not a real thing but it's looking more and more real every day.

We don't have access to MyGarage in Europe. Tried it already :-) My dealer is good friend of mine, he checked and all is well. Plus I should get some papers to sign to give up the option I paid for. Fortunately I didn't get HUD, maybe that's why I slipped under the radar.

I am curious, is the HUD something that they can add later on and your dealer installs when it becomes available?

No communication.
It just shows in the "standard" features on the build and online tracker

Thanks, I will ask to check again. Ordering a car nowadays is like walking through minefield. Touchscreen or not, can't wait for delivery.

Ask him to show you the updated build sheet.
The fact that he needs you to sign a paper that you are giving up options is a dead giveaway....

Good luck

I can understand pulling the HUDs and the touchscreens...those are both pieces of hardware that are limited in quantity. I don't understand pulling the backup assistant. That's all done with software using hardware that is still being available, that is parking sensors and radar.

Why would they pull an option that is basically just software. You can make as many copies of software as you want.

Part of the operation of parking assist is selected via touch screen.....
No touch screen......

For enough money you may be able to get anything installed in your car, but my guess is that the cost of having the HUD installed would be much more than you would want to pay for it.

I see what you're saying, but it's my understanding that anything you can do with the touch screen you can do with the control knob. Also, I thought parking assist was still available, it was just Backup Assist which was removed?

Maybe it was the entire parking assist.? IDK.

I have to believe that if we are losing options due to no touchscreen we would be losing a lot more than just backup assistant.

If back-up assistant goes away, does that mean the back-up camera is gone or just the moveable box?
