Waiting on Receiver Audio Module (RAM)

Who else is waiting on a Receiver Audio Module (RAM) before their vehicle can ship?

My vehicle is at the port waiting for it. Who knows when it will come.

My wait was 3 weeks. Just understand it. No sense in getting upset over something you cannot control.

Are you saying you waited 3 weeks for a RAM module?

Do you have your vehicle yet or is it still on the ship?

What was the date of when you were waiting for the RAM?

TIA

I'm just wondering if BMW's RAM is the same acronym from the computer world for "Random Access Memory", or just their way of saying "chip". Everyone has been talking about a "chip" shortage, but I don't think they were specifically talking about RAM chips. I'm thinking language translation may be involved here.

In any case I hope the part your car needs comes in quickly.

TAZ007 has had his car for several weeks (maybe over a month) and has another thread here about his delay.

Up until today I thought that was the case also, they were waiting on Random Access Memory. But it looks like they are actually waiting on something called the Receiver Audio Module. My dealer called it an Audio Receiver Module. So it's either ARM or RAM but I don't think it is referring to memory.

My question is, why not ship the vehicle to all the dealers and then ship the modules to the dealers? That must be better than leaving a few hundred cars or so outside in a gigantic parking lot just waiting for hail and bird poop to rain down.

I don't understand the logistics. My vehicle is sitting in a gigantic parking lot in Bremerhaven, Germany. I think a lot of others are in the same "boat" (pun intended). What's going on, does BMW have a few dozen mechanics living in hotels waiting to install a bunch of modules and finish building the cars?

It seems nuts to me.

oh, no -- deja vu all over again? I thought this problem was solved. This issue delayed delivery on my M40i (March 2021 build) while it sat on the dock for a month at Bremerhaven before shipping out. Hope your wait is not nearly as long but it will be worth it - great car!

Mine is sitting here in New Jersey waiting for the same module been here for almost 2 weeks and when it comes in it comes in. I have no control over the shortages so I just go with it. I see it in my work industry so i understand what everyone is dealing with. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine knowing you have 10,000 cars needing 1 part that you have to put in for weeks to catch up. 😃

I received my car on 02 AUG and it was worth the wait. Mine waited in Bremerhaven for 3 weeks for the Receiver Audio Module and then another 3 weeks in Galveston before delivery was made. In all, the 111 day production to delivery was the longest at the end.

Thanks for the info.

Are you happy with the car? No other issues? I've been a little hesitant to pull the trigger knowing these cars are being assembled piecewise all over the place. It would make me feel a lot better knowing you haven't had any issues with yours.

The factory/VPC handles these Delivery Stops whenever possible. Dealers are independent businesses and it cost BMW more $ for dealers to handle the module install and the associated programming/activation required after the module is installed.

Btw, the RAM is a module that is part of the sound system. Here's some info worth reading.

Here is a link to Receiver Audio Module (RAM) for a 2019 Z4 in realoem.com. I'm guessing the current ones look about the same. If you look at the list below the diagram, you can see how many different versions of the RAM there are.

In many cases modules/ecu's come preprogrammed with the original iStep the car shipped with. This is why you see July, November, March dates which are the typical dates of major iStep revisions through a MY.

Love the car - everything I expected and more. No issues with it at all. Given the ramifications of the ongoing chip shortage, I feel pretty lucky to have gotten exactly what I wanted. Just be patient; it will be worth the extra wait.

Think they are shipping the cars without the RAM for installation at the VPC. Mine gets off the boat on Tuesday but is still showing the RAM as a open item.

What port is yours going to? And did you dealer let you know about the RAM or BMW genius?

Where are you able to see that the RAM is an open item? MyGarage just shows mine is at the Port but doesn't give any other information like what it might be waiting on?

Well, it looks like my car, which is at the port, has a "Defect Code Description of Retrofitting the receiver audio module" and is showing an "open" status. So I guess it won't be on the ship on the 7th. Looks like I'm back to waiting again.

Thanks not sure how often it updates but cool to see there is a page showing the status. Hope the modules come in before snow I really don’t want to make an extra 3 hour trip twice to bring up my winter rims and bring the summers home just to pick up the car as I know the wheels won’t fit in the trunk of the Z4.

I would think your car will be on the ship RAM or no RAM. My ship hits the Brunswick VPC on Tuesday. The report I ran was a few hours ago so the RAM night still be missing.

Makes more sense for them to kill the wait time for the part while the ship is at sea for a few weeks.
