Honest Quality Question

My vehicle status is currently in “Awaiting Carrier Assignment”. I’m excited to take possession but it’s a lot of money.

Can anyone speak to the quality they have experienced? I understand that from a performance and looks point of view the Z4 (G29) is second to none, but has anyone had any quality issues?

Are you happy with the quality?

What did you order? Just curious.

Coming from an SDrive 30i owner: i'm very VERY pleased with this car. Quality of materials and options are waaay up there in my happiness ledger. It's fun to drive, quick, turns heads, unique (due to scarce numbers of G29s out there) handles well, very responsive .. probably THE most fun vehicle I've ever driven.

I would second that opinion. My M40 have great fit and finish. I have had no complaints.

Ditto with me, six weeks in and 3700 miles. It's my 5th BMW. I've owned 37 new cars in my lifetime and the last 5, nothing but a roundell on the hood. (a Miata for four months, but just to see if we liked a convert) Does that give you an idea of what I think of their quality, fit and finish, handling and performance?

Thanks for all the feedback. Whereas I knew it would be a fun car to drive, it sounds like it is good quality too.

No breakdowns, or early repairs were required. I've read that some people complain about BMW quality but I've never actually talked to a BMW owner who wasn't happy. I'm looking forward to my first BMW.

While I don’t have my Z4 M40I yet I do currently have a 2019 440I X-Drive 6 MT. And it has been superb granted I have only put 20,000 miles on it. But I am so excited to get my first convertible. And I knew I had to have that B58 motor again. Best engine in my opinion in all my 32 years and probably 50 cars over the years.

There will always be complaints from a few but I think that if there were major issues with the Z4 we would be hearing about them on a dedicated forum like Bimmerpost.

Whether you get the base model or the M40i version the quality is outstanding. I told my wife the other day that I am having more fun driving the Z4 than any other car I have owned in my entire life.

If you are still concerned, I recommend you look at the reviews in Consumer Reports. There is an unbiased review in that.

This is my third BMW convertible with the last two being F12 and F13 650s and none have had quality issues. I also agree that this is a more visceral and fun car to drive, and I’ve had more people stop and comment than any other car I’ve owned before.

My 2020 Z4 had a few issues. One major one is when the roof stopped working and it took 6+ weeks for the module part to arrive from Germany.

I miss mine now that I sold it. I don't think I will ever be able to replace it either.

Never say never because when you least expect it you may have another opportunity again.

Any idea why the roof quit working? Would you say you used it more than normal or was it just bad luck? What part/module broke?

TIA

When a part/ module needs to be replaced and not available in the country you reside in they would fly the part in from Germany. Even a dealer located in Saskatchewan can request this and it shouldn't take 6+ weeks so there might have been a supply chain issue like many are currently experiencing ordering cars with the HUD.

I agree with Westside on this issue. In the past, with one of my eleven BMW motorcycles that I owned, a part needed replacing and wasn't in stock in the USA. It had to be flown in from Germany. Three days later it was here, installed on my bike and I was off and running. I have to assume it's the same with their car parts.

I believe most parts are flown to the States in a few day, but if Germany doesn't have a part in stock, it will take longer.

At my 29k mile oil change recently, they found the oil drain plug stripped. Had a small seep in the area around the plug. The dealer had a NutSert repair kit on hand to address the issue. Apparently the aluminum threads strip out easily.

No other issues to this point at 29k. Totally in love with this car.

Car is tight, quality of materials is excellent. No problems.

I've had a few very minor problems with our 2019 X5 which was a new release or make over for that line. A/C vent stopped working on the front passenger middle vent. Part was not in stock, came from Germany.

I had my M40i since July. No issue except the windshield wiper shake/jump/judder when moving over the windscreen. If I inject some window washing fluid, than it's smooth for about 3-5 wipes, then it starts again.

It's so serious to a point that I consider it's not safe to drive in the rain. I have made an appointment with the dealer to see if they have solutions.

Other than that, this car is perfect! No issues and drives very well.

Have you tried new wiper blades? Or is it more like motor or arm issues?

No, I haven't tried a new wiper. Since the car is still fairly new, I intended to let the dealer to fix it.

Personally I think it's a wiper issue rather than a motor issue. But I will need to have the dealer check it out and let me know what's causing it.

If any update, I will post here.

I actually noticed the same thing when I took it on a test drive. Thought it was going to be only for that particular car so I didn't think much of it, but now it sounds like it's a design flaw. It does sound like the problem goes away on its own over time though.
