Thanks for looking![/QUOTE]

Nice, simple but effective concept.

Some might say this isn't bokeh because the people in the BG are clearly people. I say it IS bokeh because there's no way that you can identify who they are. Their identity is totally obscured.

Great shot.

Bokeh are not necessarily circles in the background... the dots occur because you have bright light sources in the background, but bokeh is all of the blur that happens beyond the DoF.

If you take a photo that is evenly lit and exposed correctly, then you get a bokeh with no circles (smooth/creamy), but if there are some light sources then even with an evenly lit background you'll still get the bokeh circles you see in your 2nd pic.

The shape of the bokeh will vary from lens to lens, impacted by things like the number of leaves in the aperture, focal length, etc. A point of lightness may well look like a circle, or in many cases an aperture shaped hexagon or octagon. I think that's still bokeh and we have many examples in the links provided and a few in this contest. The BG detail must be obscured to a degree that the details are more than simply OOF, but start getting hard to identify.

We have few example that obscure every detail in the background, as in most but not all of the bird shots. The BG looks like a green or blue or white brushed paint. That's clearly bokeh, but making that the standard wouldn't be fair for this contest because it usually means that a long focal length was used, which many can't afford.

I agree on the pleasing (would also add "interesting") backdrop comment, nice way to describe it. My feeling is that most people use the term incorrectly when looking at an image with shallow (or narrow) depth of field. Shallow DOF seems to be very en vogue these days, especially for things like food photography. Also referring to something as "out of focus" is not really correct either.

This another image I was considering using, but not really bokeh. Extremely narrow DOF, yes.

Just an FYI from my personal studies and readings:

***DOF is seen in a photograph where there is an obvious focus area, set against a blured background or foreground.

***Bokeh on the otherhand, refers to how your camera lens renders the light that is seen within the blured parts of the image. Sometimes this can be soft or harsh circular shapes, or look like hexagons, depending on your lens design and aperture settings.

That being said I don't have a great submission at all but here goes:
