Just needed to add 1 litre after 9.5k miles. I was given FE12+ instead of LL-04.

Consumption seems ok to me.

Exclamation Z4 m40i

Hello! My experience: 430i had to top up oil twice, I remember first time within the first 3000 miles. My z4 M40i as a clockwork 2500miles needed not only a top-up but a whole quarter. Still, the thing it changes from car to car, driving style (I drive pretty hard, I get the car in temp first) and never even considered break-in periods (even tho I have to admit I waited for at least 800miles to rev it high, maybe a reflex?). Should I bring it to BMW? Let's see what happens in the next 2500 miles. And BTW, the manual ask for 0W30 but since I'm in California I'm using 5W30... I doubt we'll get ever in the -10 (0W tolerance) or even -5 (5W tolerance).

If I wrote anything stupid feel free to call me out on it. Thanks

1 quart needed at 3400 miles

had a down one quart warning while in Napa on Sunday and had it topped off at dealer. Followed break in meticulously and was surprised. Have driven mostly in sport plus mode so maybe my having fun has been part of it. will keep an eye on this though as was surprised at needing oil with so few miles.

Hmm, I guess that's why there's a quart of oil in the trunk of my new Z4 M40i in a carry pouch? I'm going to ask the dealer if that's something they do or BMW does? I've owned many (12?) different new vehicles in the past 22 years and never had oil consumption issues in any. None came with spare oil in the trunk either.

Hey Rob ,

I posted this on another post regarding the Oil consumption.

"Just got my car back today, dealer checked everything out to look for possible leaks but nothing was found. A buddy of mine works at the dealer so I had him personally check the car out and according to him driving it in sports mode a lot can cause that ( I do drive it in sports mode a lot ) he also mentioned that he noticed the same complains from other Z4 owners as well and some showed signs of leaks while majority did not. "

You got extra oil with the car ? Lol I didn't even get that with my s30. Until my next service I'm ganna try to monitor the oil levels. Hopefully nothing happens again. I mean it already happened twice between my two services that were due so I won't be surprised if it happens again...

Have a B-58 in another car & have never added oil between changes. Followed breakin & drive in Sport/Sport except on the interstate as I want 8th for mileage.

BTW breakin is more than just the engine. Every moving part including the tires have breakin requirements. Some short, some long. The 1200 miles must have an overage factor built in.

That said it does not seem to be a major hardship to follow it.

Oddly enough, since the catless DP, drop in filter, and Bootmod3 stage 2 flash, I haven’t had any oil consumption. Coming up on 19k miles now and have had no issues with consumption. However, with the increased low end power, I do find myself driving in comfort mode more than before because the car can actually pull without a down shift. I’ve also noticed my mpg go from 24.4 to 24.7 average (without resetting it so probably more than the .3 increase).

M340i oil note from Car and Driver today

This from a long term update on the 340i with the same engine. oil consumption seems to be normal:

"We had to add two quarts of oil over the first 10,000 miles, one at 4500 miles and another just before the service visit. While adding oil to any modern engine might be cause for concern, our dealer assures us it's within normal tolerances. For now, we'll take their word for it, but it's something we'll be watching closely."

I've had about a dozen brand new cars since 1998 and I have never had to put oil in any of them between changes. Although my friend warned me about a Subaru I bought a few years ago because his used oil a lot. I guess I didn't keep it long enough to find out.

You would think a modern engine would be more efficient in this regard?

absolutely and I will be keeping an eye on it for sure as I had to add a quart at 3500 miles. Suprisingly my Z4 M Coupe which had the last NA inline 6 M3 engine required very little oil between changes but some (but I didn't drive it very hard/babied it but am driving this new Z4 harder and more in Sport Plus mode as I realized when I sold the MCoupe that I should have enjoyed it more). And my 1999 S2000 which I still have with 155K miles has not once needed any oil added although it has always been regularly driven to the 9K redline. Surprising for a newer engine but have to say this new engine is an amazing engine - love it!

At 23k miles and got the engine oil at minimum again. About 4K after last oil change. Guessing I can expect a qt needed every 3-4K miles from now on

Adding to my original post:

At around 2700 miles I had the first message for the engine needing oil.

I followed break-in procedures almost perfectly. But, after break-in, and after warming up the engine for around 7-10 minutes during each road trip, I've been pushing it fairly hard regularly in Sport Plus and S/M modes.

Dont fret, same issue with some of the M340i's. Mine needed oil three times before first oil change at 9K. South Florida dealer told me it's normal and should improve after 1st oil change.

I also noticed that how you drive have nothing to do with it. There are guys who drive their M340i's in sport plus all the time and don't have this issue. Strange phenomenon and appears to be luck of the draw.

I am pretty sure there is a correlation between mods, aggressive driving style and oil consumption.

Just looked at mine & no oil useage shown. Not a big fan of not having a dipstick.

I find it a bit of a leap of faith relying on a computer to check the oil, rather than a good old fashioned dipstick.

At around 4500 miles and M40i needs its second quart of oil. So around 2700 miles for first quart and 1800 for the second quart.

This is starting to seem really really bizarre. I drive in sport plus and S more exclusively, for the most part. I followed break-in exactly. So basically I’m going to need to add a quart of oil every 1800 miles. That seems excessively excessive....

Not sure why you would feel that way. Maybe researching the sensors involved, and the backup sensors for the sensors, will make you feel more secure about it. It’s not rocket science and there is enough redundancy that a failure of a sensor is instantly noticed by the ECU.
