Non-Run Flats
So I see the Z4 comes with non-RFTs and no spare.
So what do you all do if you get a flat tire?

no worries. my current car has no spare tire and goflat tires. if I get a puncture, I just patch it on the side of the road and use a pump to get it back up.
If it's worse, I call a tow truck. |

By experience, those are useless most of the time. In the flats I have had, the wheels rip the sidewalls before you can stop - there is no patching then.

I hate the run flats on my 135i but I think I hate being stuck on the side of the highway in the middle of January even worse.

Guess it depends on the roads you drive on and how bad (or good) they are. I had my E46 M3 for eight years and had only one flat. Have had my M4 for almost 6 years and no flats so far. Have had the Z4 for 5 months and good so far. So, to date, only one flat in 14 years with three different cars doesn't sound like the apocalypse.

Well there is this;
- runflats suck; they tend to be noisier and not handle as well - bad things on a sportscar - a spare tire (even the little temp ones) take up too much space and weigh too much - we have the pump and sealer - despite any anecdotal evidence to the contrary, this should suffice the vast majority of the time. - cell phone coverage is really good these days! :-) .....I have a fleet of vehicles and despite the fact that we drive around on construction sites strewn with screws, metal debris, etc. we only get a flat every year or two on 12 vehicles. I haven't had a flat on a personal vehicle in decades.....I did get a screw in the tire on our GLC a month ago (again, we built a new house so there were nails and screws everywhere) but it was only a slow leak and I drove it to the tire store and had it fixed. ....all in all, I'm happy with what we have been given on the Z4 and wouldn't want run flats or a spare tire. Cheers, Dave |

This is what you do when you order NRF tires on a z4
Had the jack and torque wrench from my 335. Only had to buy the rim and tire. The pump sand sealer don't work 95% of the time. I'd rather have a spare and jack kit then wait 2 hours for a tow guy to show up. Still plenty of room in this trunk.

Not sure where 95% of the time comes from but I suspect the pump and sealer would work most of the time. ....it's all about risk/vs reward - I get a flat once every 10 or 20 years so when I do, I'll use the sealer and pump and on the off chance that doesn't work, I'll live with the delay for the tow truck........for ME, that's far less of an issue than dealing with a spare taking up space and adding weight every minute I drive the car. YMMV

I agree the last few "flats" I've had have been more like slow-sh leaks as a result of a nail or a screw in the tire.
But I agree its rare you get a complete blowout that leaves you stranded on the side of the road.

It's not rare at all to have a flat be not repairable. With low profile tires, it is very common to have the rim cut the sidewall when the tire goes flat at highway speeds and shred the sidewall. That's different from a complete blowout, but the results are the same.

Again; it's a "positives" vs. "negatives" risk analysis that will vary depending on usage, experience and personal preferences. For me I think BMW did the right thing; I don't want the added weight and space penalty for a spare to mitigate (what I consider to be) a fairly low risk of a non repairable flat. For my 4x4 truck and even my offroad motorcycles, I have an entirely different opinion.... Dave |

I usually carry a tire plug kit with no runflats or spare. Last couple lats were slow leaks (screw/nail) I have been able to fix them right on the car and use the stock air compressor minus the goo. Good enough to drive a while and have it fixed properly. Its pretty rural here with spotty cell phone coverage and no spare but I have been lucky and only had a couple flats in the last 5 years.
