I've been enjoying the exclusivity of the Z4 since my '06 3.0i, in the summer I usually drive out to the Hamptons and Montauk a few times and see so many Ferraris, Lambos, Maserattis, 911s, Boxters, SLs, SLKs, Jags, Bentleys and RRs I cannot count them, it's rare that I'll see a Z4 of any generation maybe every other time.

Once while out riding in the summer of 2020, a friend and I stopped at a park somewhere northwest of ATL (I was letting him pick our route and was just enjoying the scenery and weather, completely oblivious to where we ended up) and two younger guys were showing off their respective cars to each other. One of the cars was definitely a Z4, though I didn’t notice the model badging. And last summer I was waiting to go left at a light and an older guy pulled up to the same light in the far right lane in a Z4 M40i with the top down - that’s the first time I’m sure I saw the M Performance version of the Z4. When the light turned green, the engine made wonderful sounds as he sped away from the light and up the gently curving ascent. I think it’s that memory that helped me pivot so quickly to the Z4 when I was narrowing down options for a convertible because at the time some part of me thought, “That’s a car I would probably enjoy owning, except I would want the M version.” The funny thing is that the ‘older guy’ probably wasn’t that much older than I am. It wasn’t until I did subsequent research on the M40i that I concluded it was plenty quick and sporty enough for my needs - no M version required! And because I was using fueleconomy.gov for the first time in my car buying life, I will admit that the Z4’s stellar mileage carried an outsized bit of weight in arriving at a decision. Everything else I was considering had relatively dismal fuel economy and equally bad greenhouse gas emissions. The Z4 M40i strikes an ideal balance between comfort and sport, and performance and economy/reduced environmental impact, IMO. And my personal lack of sightings might be related to pandemic timing - I’m sure if I were still driving into an office most weekdays, I’d have seen several more Z4s in the wild by now. I suppose I’ve had a thing for the Z cars since when I was driving to a winery in Napa or Sonoma with some friends circa 2000/2001 and was caught in some traffic for a few miles directly behind a Z3 M roadster. As a car guy, I knew what it was and had a general idea of its overall performance envelope. But there was just something about that car that I really liked upon seeing & hearing it in person. And luxurious though it may be, the Z4 still has that same kind of raw, muscle car vibe that Z3 M Roadster had. But with a more sophisticated rear suspension. I have said it before and will say it again, I have never seen a TV commercial which included a Z4. You always see roadsters included in commercials from other car manufacturers. Mercedes features their roadsters in some of their commercials.
I didn't realize that the new G29 body existed until I went to my dealer with the intention of ordering a 4 series convertible and saw a Z4 sitting in his garage and inquired about it. It was a white/ cognac sDrive30i and I took it out for a test drive and feel in love with the looks and handling of the car. Once I saw the colors available I immediately knew that I wanted the Misano Blue/ ivory combination and without test driving one I decided to "go for the gusto" and ordered an M40i. If the marketing people at BMW wanted to increase sales they should include the Z4 in some of their commercials. Possibly one showing all of the convertibles that they offer in their lineup together. If they did this perhaps the Z4 or any future roadster from them wouldn't be an endangered species. |

Saw another one (that's 3 for me now) in the wild about an hour ago today. It was red with black Shadowline trim, and the top was down. That's about all I noticed before it passed me. Not sure if it was an M40i, but suspect it was.

Its funny among passenger cars everything is down except the 4-series (which is up a lot) and to a much lesser degree the Z4.

I would be curious to know if there was an increase in Supra sales that parallels the Z4 sales increase.

We should have a sightings thread.
I saw ANOTHER one today (4 total for me ‘in the wild’ now). This morning on a walking route that I’ve been doing with my dog for years, for the first time I saw a Misano Blue Z4 M40i with Cerium gray wheels and a white interior motor past very quietly with the top down. The blue with Cerium wheels and trim and white interior is my favorite color combo - but I’m glad I didn’t get it given that someone else so nearby has one. It had a personalized plate of some sort as well, but I didn’t quiet catch it before it disappeared around a turn. Also, re: the Q1 2022 production numbers, I wonder how much certain models being down has to do with BMW steering scarce semi-conductors to higher margin vehicles. About 10 minutes earlier on the walk, I was passed by a whisper quiet M850i convertible in dark green with black wheels, and with drive-out tags. Clearly it’s springtime in Georgia! Swung by BMW Welt with the family on our way to Austria two weekends ago and was similarly disappointed there was no Z4 in the showcase.
New M240i? Yup. M440i GC? Why not, and go ahead and climb inside it. M850i? There it is. M3Comp and M4 Cabrio. Of course! But no Z4. 😔 Ironically, I did see another family taking delivery of a SF Red Z4 sdrive30i. I could only point it out to the kids from a distance and say ours will look something like that when it's delivered. Even in Bavaria, the G29 is pretty rare; it's part of what attracts me to it. |

Regarding advertising, no one advertises sports cars. I can't remember the last time I've seen a Z4, TT, SLK, 718, or even a corvette in a TV ad. The reason being that the US roadster market segment is so small (and shrinking). The Z4 sales figures in the USA means that the average BMW dealership sells less than 1 a month despite very favorable press reviews.
