I’m a big fan of lots of lights, and find these BMW lights outstanding, without fog lights, the low beams have excellent range and angle to the left and right. The high beams have tremendous range and seem to go almost as far as the hella spots that I have on my truck!

The auto assist works well; it seems to have a strange fade in and fade out effect, such that I’m curious what is going on in the lights. You can see the leveling work when you turn them on for the first time.

Like I said, these lights are excellent and very effective. I live in the country, so good lights are a must.

I don’t think mine has that. 20i 2020
Actually, I have only driven in the dark probably twice in the last 4 years!!

My last cars had advanced automatic and steerable lighting etc etc then I realised not necessary considering I’m scared of the dark.

Its an option that you can activate through the connected drive store in most countries i believe.

When you have it it's almost like driving in the daylight, so no more reason to be scared

Here in Belgium there are so many street lights that you could easily drive with all the car lights off.
I don't use it that often. I mostly use it on forest roads or when I'm in another country :-)

Mine are enabled and I like the way they work and that the car remembers the previous state (the state they were in when I last turned off the car).

My MINI Cooper had auto high beam assistant but it was always off by default when I started up the car.

I don't believe that's the case in the US. If it's not optioned with the purchase order, you can't get it (without coding with ISTA or similar)

I believe all Z4s (and probably other BMW models similarly) produced for the US market are shipped with:

5AP --- Decoding for no-dazzle high-beam assistance

due to US regulations, effectively disabling the advanced capabilities.

I use them, and like them. I'm actually astounded at how it determines when to turn on the high beams. I thought for sure certain bright reflective signs would fool them, but no.

Last night I was driving down a really dark side street and I noticed that the auto highbeams only activated when I was doing over 20-25 mph. Is there a speed you have to exceed for them to work?

Yes, below a certain speed, high beams are off. Does the same thing in my truck, but at around 30mph.

It was the first time I really noticed and perhaps because it was because it was really dark side street.

From page 162 of the owner's manual:

"Automatic High Beam Assistant Principle

The Automatic High Beam Assistant detects
other road users early on and automatically
switches the high beams on or off depending on
the traffic situation.

General information
The Automatic High Beam Assistant ensures
that the high beams are switched on, whenever
the traffic situation allows. In the low speed
range, the high beams are not switched on by
the system
"

No mention of the speed threshold, but found a post on another forum that said they're turned on at 40kph, and turned off at 30kph.

Thanks, that was really helpful as I thought it activated at about 25 mph which is the equivalent of 40 km/h

I use them every day. It's a reliable feature. They activate above 25mph or so.

Our Z4 headlights are fixed and don't swivel with steering input, so I don't think even with coding that they could split beams around oncoming cars. My 2017 3-series could do that, but I think the Z4 has superior light output. I have no complaints about the headlights on this car. And our cars are low enough that I don't think fog lights would matter.

Thing I like is how "smart" the system is. Will drop on oncoming cars but high reflecting road signs don't effect it.

Its also sees red tail lights & drops as you close on a car infront of you on a dark road.

I am planning to order a 23 Z4. I am curious if the anti-dazzle coding does anything if it coded to back on. I know they can't turn left to right (annoying since my 2012 335is can), so I was wondering if the anti-dazzle will reduce the brightness of the lights instead of turning them away?

Have coded some stuff but never tried the lights. What it looks like when driving is the beam cuts off at a specific "line" straight across when it drops. Don't know if is a shutter or refocus of the light.

It seem to work OK for the oncoming traffic as I don't get any flashes asking me to drop the lights.

Also had the moveable beams on my 2011 335IS which the Z4 does not have. A small light, aimed to the side, does come on to light your way into a driveway - whatever. Its pretty effective.

Mine splits beams into incoming traffic or around any car driving in front of me,keeping high beams on unless you drive into a high illuminated area. I guess it changes from Europe to the US.Some times I have a car driving in front of me, and my lights illuminates the road both sides in front of him better than its own headlights.
