Weird pause in acceleration when pressing the gas pedal

I started up the car today, backed out of my spot and and when I put the transmission into drive (Adaptive mode) and stepped on the gas pedal there was no reaction and then seconds later while still pressing on the pedal the car started accelerating. There was a few second pause from the time I stepped on the pedal before the car started moving and then it reoccurred while I was still pressing hard. Finally I pulled the car over to the side of the road, turned the engine off, started it again and everything was ok. It almost felt like the car was in neutral and I was revving the engine but the dash display clearly said I was in Adaptive Mode.

Has something like this ever happened to anyone?

I was not flooring the gas and just accelerating from a dead stop at a normal pace.

The ONLY time this happened to me .... was because I forgot I turned the car off. lol

Was it a one time thing or is this repeatable?

Computer might have had a temporary brain fart. Notice guys on the Acura site are having a similar issue with quick standing start or low speed 90* left turns. Hit the gas nothing happens then it takes off.

Remember your gas peddle is not directly connected to the throttle plates. ECU needs to tell the intake what to do based on its interpretation of the gas peddle movement.

If the engine revved out, it sounds more like the transmission did not shift out of neutral.

I'd keep an eye out to see if it happens again.

I’ve had a few experiences with significant hesitation, but they were intermittent and fairly rare, like several times over two years of ownership. I remember thinking if this happens again I’m going to bring it in, and then it didn’t happen and I forgot about it.

I pulled over and turned it off and then restarted. Is was ok when I drove after that but I worry why it should have happened at all.

It wasn't a quick start as I was in a 15 mph driveway in my condo accelerating slowly and driving straight ahead to exit the property and I wasn't flooring it.

The car had started to move forward so I definitely was not in neutral when it happened.

I will definitely be on the lookout and go straight to the dealer if it happens again.

The only time where I have ever experienced any hesitation in the 2 years I have owned my Z4 was in Sport Plus mode and I attributed this to not keeping steady pressure on the pedal. I was not driving in an aggressive manner when this happened today.

These guys did not report flooring it, just a normal press to quickly get to road speed. Some from a stop - some from a roll.

Still think its a ECU hiccup as it cleared on a restart.

Thanks for the clarification, I will definitely keep watching and see if it happens again. Even though the car was in drive it felt like it was in neutral.

When you have issues like this, where they go away on their own or after a restart, it is common for them to set shadow codes. You can pull your codes using a code reader and you should be able to see the cause. Usually they are just a computer or sensor glitch and don't need any fix, but if they keep happening and they reach their threshold they can turn on a dash light (think check engine light) and will need to be addressed, but they are usually nothing to worry about unless they turn on a light. If you are concerned, you can ask your dealer about the issue the next time you take your car in for service and they can let you know if there is a real problem or not.

Thanks for that suggestion, I will definitely ask my SA about it as I have to go over there next week. 👍🏻

Gear shift is electronic no physicals connection to the transmission. So the shift can be in an ingear position but the transmission in neutral if it did not get the email or got the wrong email.

've had a very similar problem very rarely when pulling away from a stop at low to medium throttle.

What if feels like is horrible turbo-lag, at first it feels like there's no power so I press a little harder on the gas and then WAM the turbo spools and I almost rear-end the car in front of me .

That really describes what I experienced yesterday. Did you do anything with your service department to correct the issue?

This issue was often reported in a German forum. After an update to a newer software it disappeared. What is your sw version?

This issue is here known as "moment of remembrance" and this seems to be fixed in 2022. So yours is a different one.
