https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/01/30/2...els-auto-show/

“Don’t go looking for a six-speed manual gearbox because BMW has yet to unveil the Z4 M40i with a clutch pedal. Our sources have told us it’s still planned for a release later this year, and could very well be among the last cars from BMW to have a stick shift.”

This article (2023 BMW Z4 M40i Facelift Filmed At Brussels Auto Show) was written by Adrian Padeanu — news editor, Europe at Motor1.com (who also writes for BMWBLOG).

The other recent article (The Manual BMW Z4 M40i Will Likely Be the Last Manual BMW Ever) was written by Nico DeMattia — one of The Drive’s weekend editors (who also writes for BMWBLOG).

They are both fairly certain a Z4 manual will show up this year in the US. I’m still holding out hope…

I already spoke to my dealer and will be putting a deposit for a manual allocation. He thinks it’ll be late summer/fall for a 2024 which I think is in line with the chatter anyway. Fingers crossed.

Same boat here, my nearby dealer didnt have anyone on the 2024 list yet (I'm assuming it will be 2024). No deposit needed they just took my info for now, I explained it's manual or nothing.

If I remember correctly, we didn’t get info on the 2023 until like October. Could be a few months until 2024 news is out.

That’s what I was just thinking: if there’s a manual, it isn’t a few facelift items, it needs a lot more testing. So I would have thought we might have heard about what testing they are doing with the manual.

Of course, that’d probably hurt 2023 sales, maybe.

Or, they have already tested it some time ago but decided to not commit to it at that time.

In my opinion, it has already been tested on the Supra.

Thinking out loud... I'm wondering if it would be better to have a manual with the B58, or a re-tuned automatic with a S58.

Ideally, I'd just move the S58+manual from the M2 to the Z4, but I'm setting expectations low

Yea that would.be ungodly. And you just know the z4 will not only get the FULL hp in thr m3/4, unlike the true baby car the oversized m2, but it will probably be the best handling, fastest accelerating (if xdrive included) bmw to date (not counting m5/m8). The m3/4 would have NOTHING on a smaller z4 especially with x drive and the full powered s58.

But we can only dream. I wish the z4m came out because the g80 guys feel like they're better becsuse they have a m4 and some think we get z4 because "we can't afford an m4" 🙄, in reality I don't want a boat. I have many other boats on wheels for "practicality". Give me light weight short wheelbase two seater roadster all day

Now now…

Not all M4 owners look down at the Z4. It’s one of my favourite BMWs and really hope they make it with a manual because that’s a dealbreaker for me on a sports car. But seeing as how I’m taking delivery of my M4 in about 6’weeks once the snow melts I’m also not in the market for a Z4 for 2-ish years, so the last of the production run. I’d also be interested in a Targa Supra if that came out…???

Congradultions very nice car!! Enjoy the ride.

On the looking down on the Z4, Of course we do. I feel so embarrassed when I have to drive the Z4, will my neighbors think I got fired. Right now whenever I drive my 1998 pickup I sneak out of the neighborhood in the dark with a bag over my head so no one will know its me.

Can't really believe people think that way Z4 vs M4. Know lots of guys on the M3/4 forum have cars like Miata, Z4, Stingrays etc.

Also don't get the feeling the guys who also have high end Porsches, Ferraris are looking down on us poor M4 drivers.

People who might think like that should make a major contribution to the local shrinks Lamborghini Fund as quick as possible. Thing is unless you are the one someone will always have a more expensive car than you do. Seems like someone has not figured that out yet & really has issues with M3/4's owners.

The Z4 M40i with manual gearbox will go into production on March 1, 2024.
This is a decision.

Why March 2024?
People living in the United States should be aware of the General Safety Regulation (GSR) that will be enforced in the EU.

General Safety Regulation (GSR) – are requirements which are relevant for admission and need to be fulfilled in all vehicles on the market at each time of use New Types (NT) and All Types (AT). In the following there are the driver assistance functions described. Due to relevance for admission of these requirements all FAS functions need to be existent in the basic versions of the vehicles.

All the requirements shall improve the road safety in EU.
Status of the requirements are still in draft mode: Date of finalisation 5 April 21 (category B) and 5 April 23 (category C).

Deployment times for the relevant FAS Functions (AEBS, EKLS, ISA, RD):

New Types (NT) defined by implementation criteria “date of approval”. (Date of type approval of a new vehicle.)
07/22: NT Phase 1 (6 July 22) category B
07/24: NT Phase 2 (7 July 24) category C

All Types (AT) defined by implementation criteria “In Verkehr bringen ( road approval)”.
07/24: AT Phase 1 (7 July 24) category B – start of use regarding Stock-Clearance at 03/24
07/26: AT Phase 2 (7 July 26) category C – start of use regarding Stock-Clearance at 03/26

In the detailed planning of the derivative-specific deployment dates, the 3 month rule for the approval of exceptions for series that are expiring must be taken into account.
The technical specifications for the new requirements are set out in regulations of the European Commission that are yet to be drawn up.
The ordinances are to be published up to 15 months before the implementation date.
These detailed requirements for each measure are then communicated by subject-specific FATEVs.

I'm sorry but you've lost me. What does all of that have to do with the March 2024 production start date. I wasn't able to discern anything relevant.

If production starts before March 2024, the type will need to be acquired twice. That will require a large amount of money and time.
