Don’t quote me on this, but I think Apple Maps will appear in the HUD if you’re using that for nav.

Of course, yes, you are right two different issues. I guess I was thinking more about fiddling with the phone; unless it’s a long journey, I avoid charging the phone in the vehicle.

My truck has wireless charging and it’s almost just as useless (awkward to get phone in and out). No Wireless CarPlay. The number of times I’ve left my phone in the car, because it’s plugged in to charge or CarPlay, is frustrating.

Having everything work without having to do anything is great. Which reminds me, is there a way to automatically put the top down as you approach the car, so that as you open the door handle everything is down?

I never use Apple Maps, but I believe you are correct.

IIRC, if you hold down the unlock button on your key remote long enough, the top will go down.

Apple Maps is more up to date than my month old Z. My neighborhood isn’t in the BMW maps, but it is in the Apple Maps.

I just double checked the manual and was correct. Page 77 confirms that holding down the key will lower the windows and the top.

When it first came out it was a disaster and I haven’t used it since. I either use Waze or the BMW navigation depending on the situation.

They do that, now. From my limited Waze usage, I'd say Waze is still better for that, though (for some reason, Waze annoys me. Don't know why).

Perhaps it is the voice which can be changed through the settings. You could have male or female, and also a UK instead of a US accent if you want.

As for heat - on my iPhone Waze + Pandora will quickly heat it up. Had 3 or 4 shutdowns in 3 years mostly in the summer.

Map useage. Use both WAZE & BMW at the same time. WAZE on the big screen for speed trap warnings & BMW for HUD directions.

In most cases the map directions aline.

Key will be number of people using & reporting. WAZE has a very big base right now with excellent reporting & is my main detector.

That's one of the points I was interested in with my questions in my earlier post. BMW's wireless charger overheating issues are well known as a standalone issue but I'm sure there are external elements that affect the severity.

When I run Waze and stream music simultaneously, the battery discharges much faster than normal. Logic suggests an actively discharging phone laying on a wireless charging pad would amplify the overheating issue.

The other thing I'm curious of is if the magnet on the back of my iphone and case (magsafe) compound the problem. I'll experiment when the weather improves.

A curious side note: The factory wireless charger located inside the center armrest of my F57 (with wireless CarPlay) that I drove for nearly 4 years overheated my iPhone only once during that entire period and it was on a hot summer day with the top down, sun shining directly on the interior. I don't understand how they could get it right in the MINI but not BMW models.

Can we confirm that there hasn't been any complaints from Mini owners.

Makes no sense, as I was under the impression that the power delivered to the phone was limited by the phone itself. So even if you were running multiple items at once, I think the iPhone for example still limits the charging to 7.5W or whatever. Hopefully they can figure it out at some point.

This M3/4 thread might be of interest as the user base is bigger than ours.

View Poll Results: 64 to 32 don't use it.

If you have the wireless charging option, do you:

Use it on a regular basis and find it helpful 32 - 33.33%

Use it rarely or never and think it's the worst 64 - 66.67%

FWIW my vote is in the 66.67%. Based on my Z4 experience did not order it.

I skipped ordering it as well based on all the negative on the forum and experience with Toyotas.
However; it works flawlessly on my 22 tesla model 3
So it’s not impossible to make this technology work seemlesly.

One of the few things I enjoy on my model3 lol.

Agree, Works fine in the 23 FORD Expedition Max. Was part of a package & not stand alone or I most likely would have passed on it.

I got tired of my iphone overheating when using GPS apps and driving more than 30 minutes, so I designed and built a Z4 specific cooling fan that a number of folks on this forum have purchased. I live in GA and with the fan on I can drive all day with Apple CarPlay and Waze running without my phone overheating. It still gets warm, but not hot enough to cause it to shut down. It has a switch to turn it off when you don’t need it, but the USB port will shut down automatically when the car goes to sleep if you leave it on. I’m currently building one for another member of the forum. If anyone is interested feel free to message me.
