The girl in the EVA incident went on to have another deal the following week.

We used to have only a fixed number of training hours to get signed-off on a position. The FAA, in its infinite wisdom, decided that wasn't "fair," so went to "train to succeed." We called it train to suck. I know a guy that spent at least 2 years trying to certify on one position (when I retired he still wasn't certified!). The FAA also went to social hiring and not aptitude/ability/talent hiring. I could go on...

There was ~27 feet of separation between FedEx and SWA, not even factoring in the landing gear on the FedEx. Pretty damn close.

On the subject of recon aircraft. There was a very secretive unit based in Hawaii for years (and another in Brunswick, Maine, years earlier) with P-3Bs and later P-3Cs. The one in Hawaii was designated Patrol Special Projects Unit TWO (VPU-2), had a small number of modified P-3s assigned and deployed all over the globe for special projects. The aircraft either had no markings or had deceptive markings of other units.

Until a couple of years ago, VPU-2 was scheduled to be disestablished, but now some modified Boeing P-8A aircraft have appeared and seem to be assigned to that unit. The mods include a bunch of extra antennas, implying a SIGINT capability of some type. Interestingly, a google search for "VPU-2 P-8A" results mostly in Chinese web sites.

On the more conventional side, squadron VQ-1 flying EP-3E SIGINT aircraft, appears to be not long for this world. The USN has stated that the replacement is the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton drone, which has had a protracted development period. Two MQ-4Cs were finally deployed to Guam in 2020. The MQ-4C is also being built for the Royal Australian Air Force and was scheduled to be purchased by Germany, which cancelled the program and is buying manned Bomardier Global 6000 SIGINT aircraft instead.

Lastly, on the subject of mysterious USN P-3s are the P-3s -- and now apparently P-8As based in Dallas, Texas. Both the previous P-3s and the current P-8As sport a distinctive (LSRS radar) pod on the belly. I believe the previous so-equipped P-3s deployed to Afghanistan some years ago.
