Everything about it is so obscene. Wagon. Fender flares, aggressive styling, massive wheels and brakes. Insane power. In many cases it's comical. But I want one so badly! Thoughts…?

You can have your cake and eat it too, that's what's appealing.

You have space and utility and you give up nothing in performance and road handling.

If you like to "do stuff", these are often the ultimate machines. They are nothing like minivans or SUVs. You can haul the fam around and a bunch of stuff in the "trunk", or you can put the seats down and transport a big-screen TV or some other gigantic thing. You can go for a big trip because you have the space to take the gear.

I mean, I guess buy the minivan, but I'll take the wagon every day and sunday. If you can have 5 cars, again, this may not be for you. If you can only have a few, it's hard to beat the utility of a wagon.

Apart from the whole forbidden fruit thing going on for Americans I don't see why either.

They feel very heavy, torque steer like mad, hate changing direction and ride like crap. I've driven all variants from C5 to C8 and they really are just a bunch of numbers on a spreadsheet.

The B8 S4 and RS4 don't have enough torque or enough engine weight to be bad cars but IMHO anything Audi make that is over about 500nm is a complete pile of garbage due to the torque steer, those same cars will also be very heavy at the front.

I really did want to like the C7 S6 as it has a dual clutch gearbox instead of the torque converter auto in the RS6 but those weigh about the same the RS6 and deliver their power in a very flat and boring way. The C6 V10 S6 was similar with its power delivery - big number but in the real world the slowest 400hp plus car I've driven.

If you must buy a new Audi and want something quick, buy an RS3 or an R8, everything else is pretty weak imho.

True, but wondering if it's only me who thinks that way. I don't feel the same level of excitement looking at the G81? Touring.

I honestly question that you have actually driven the C8 RS6 based on your description. Sure it's not the fastest or most engaging compared to the M5 Comp or E63s, but it definitely does not torque steer like crazy mad as you put it (that was more of a C7 thing and tires fixed that), and certainly does not ride like crap or hate changing direction. Are they heavy, yup but still very much enjoyable and the better GT car out of the bunch, and a hell of a lot more comfortable for daily use.

I'm most likely getting one! I don't think I can wait for the Z06 for that long. Get one brother. You will never see them on the road!! That to me is one of the main reasons to have one. There will be a ton of M3/4 around. They are selling like crazy. I always loved those wagons and are happy they are finally in the US. Coil-overs, 22" rims, downpipe, exhaust with a tune That is a BAD ASS machine!!! Go to the drag strip with your beach chairs and golf clubs and rip off a few low 10's or maybe a high 9? LOL

Not sure, I find it terribly ostentatious and down right ugly. Looks like their lead designer owns a Civic Si. Not that I haven't seen Audi wagons that turn my crank, it's just that the RS6 isn't one of them.

I had a V70 AWD wagon for a long while, and I loved the utility of it. It wasn't a fast wagon but a great car. I'd love to put a fast wagon in the driveway.

It's a good looking wagon and not an understeering pig like last gen but I've lost a lot of enthusiasm for Audi over the years as their vehicles are more clinical than fun and unlike BMW they haven't improved their reliability at all over the years.

I mean, if you are looking at any audi, you are already compromising handling for their engine placement ahead of the front axle. I didn't really read the OPs post as why choose an Audi?, just looking at the RS6 Avant and why choose a wagon.

I'd have a RS4 Avant or equivalent if it was made and imported to the US. I don't have a use for anything as big and crazy as the E 63 AMG or RS6 Avant, but I'd definitely go for the M3-sized wagon. The old RS2 Avants and similar cars were just beasts. We get quite a few of those at AutoX and they do well. What I really don't like about the RS6 is it comes with 22s, which is just too large for day-to-day, filling up the wheel-sells and pushing the wheels out to the extreme is going way too far these days. You sacrifice acceleration, ride and durability and there's no real benefit, except "it looks cool", to people who obviously don't care that much about practicality and these other things.

The shape of the RS6 Avant is good though. I'm not sure what it is about a wagon that people think "ruins" the car. Some come off looking like they have a tumor out back, like the Saab 9-3 aero, which looks a bit more like an old taurus wagon IMO, but most of them come off looking pretty damn hot. CTS-V wagon, how cool was that? Maybe it's just the phycological thing for some people, that a wagon can dust their "sports car"?

Despite what JD Power may have to say, I've had no problems whatsoever in any of my Audi's. My wife's Q7 has 18k miles on it now and not a single squeak or rattle, and zero trips to the dealership other than routine maintenance. Not that my short time with the M340i is indicative of BMW quality, but it did spend more time at the dealership than my S4/5 and RS5 did combined. Most cars a fairly reliable these days. It's usually silly little things that make or break JD Power scores.

It's got the recipe that has stood the test of time.

Take a well-made, sport influenced sedan. Give it as much storage as an SUV, while retained the sport sedan driving dynamics. Give it race-inspired performance modifications like the engine, drive-train, body parts. And bingo, you have a car that can perform and feel better than 90% of the other vehicles on the road(certainly 99% of all the other SUVs on the road). The best all-around vehicle you can have.
