Check engine

So yesterday I went to go for a drive on my lunch break and had the engine light come on. So I scheduled a dealer visit and of course the soonest they have is a month away. Then when I tried to remote start with the app I got an error message. Has anyone ever see this yet. I also noticed this morning it seemed to idle a bit rough which I hadn’t noticed before.

To really tell what is going on, you need to pull the codes. Some auto parts stores will pull them for free if you don't have a code reader. It is hard to tell if it is something simple or more complex without reading the codes.

Did you check the cars status on the remote to see if it saw all the doors, windows closed etc.

I got caught out one day with a door that was not fully closed.

Sounds dumb, but check your gas cap. A loose or missing gas cap can throw a CEI I believe.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did check the gas cap thinking I might’ve left it loose and that was not the case. All the windows and doors are showing up and locked as well. I will see if any of the local auto parts stores can scan the codes.

I recently had the Check Engine light come on the dash but not on the screen. It stayed on for a week and then went out the following week. I had made an appointment when first noticed, so the light was out for the appointment. I had rough idling too.

At the appointment, the codes indicated the MAP sensor and cylinder 1 mixture rich. BMW NA advised them to basically reset the system and recheck the codes. The MAP sensor went away and the tech discovered the spark plug loose on cylinder 1. They checked and tightened all spark plugs and returned the car. Rough idle disappeared.

Note, the codes will be kept in the hard drive so make the appointment and it'll be covered under warranty. If you are too concerned take it to them to read the codes. Good Luck

So I did go to the auto parts store and they tried, but the car is too new. Also I have noticed now after parking the car that I can hear a motor in the front possibly one of the active grill shutter’s trying to turn it does eventually stop. I’m assuming it eventually powers down so hopefully that is the engine light I’m seeing. Will know more once I finally get an appointment at the dealer. They have me on cancellation notice so hopefully much sooner.

So they did a software update yesterday I drove home all fine then today on the way home engine light came in again. They said they have had issues with the active grille shutters and if the software update didn’t fix it they have to replace them. Now I have to take another day off to bring it back to the dealer. I am not upset about defective parts as it happens. I am upset because of this engine light I can’t use the remote start which sucks.

So I called the dealer this morning and they are scheduling me for the 23rd of December to diagnose again but nothing about actually fixing it. This is very frustrating to say the least. Since the engine light is on I can’t use the remote start. And waiting 3 weeks for them to diagnose what is almost certainly the same problem. If this is how things continue to go I will be selling the car and it will be my last BMW. I can’t keep taking days off from work to diagnose drive home and have the light come on again.

I had the engine shutters as well. I was told it is a common failure. Note, if it happens in summer it will be an overheating issue.

Yeah that is why I am upset as I was told by the service advisor about the known problem yet they want to diagnose again instead of just replacing them. Just seems ridiculous to bring it back for them to plug it in and say yup same problem let’s schedule another visit for the repairs.

I'm pretty sure that's what will happen. That's why I sold my 335i. I don't recall the dealer ever having anything in stock.

Don't get disheartened. I found the time they needed to diagnose often found another problem. Just speak with the advisor and tell them you need a loaner and leave the vehicle. Should be a non-issue.

Sometimes services issues are resolved by the "luck of the draw" when it comes down to the dealer you are working with. Here in Florida there are certain dealers that have a service department with a bad reputation and others that are great. I know your options are limited up in Vermont but demand they fix it or you will escalate the issue to BMW USA.

Don't let one dealer ruin your experience with a great car!

Thank you to everyone the need to vent does help greatly. Also the service manager just called me a little while ago to apologize and inform me they were indeed replacing all the shutters and had an earlier appointment on the 19th. The person I talked to was someone who just schedules appointments and does not know any of the prior issues. They already have the parts in stock to replace them. Thanks again for listening to my complaining. I know I wouldn’t sell the car over something so trivial. The car is way too awesome. Turned 15,800 as my 1 year anniversary.

I'm impressed they had the part in stock. When ours needed replacing they had to order from LA, which I felt was reasonable given how few I see on the road around here. Took about a week. They wanted to keep the car since I had a loaner but my wife is VERY leery about driving some strange huge tank like a 3-series, so we picked it up the same day it was diagnosed and waited for the part to come in.

I was happy to hear that as well. Lucky for me the engine light decided to go out so I can at least remote start on the cold mornings….hahaha. They will give me a loaner for the day while they do the repairs.

You can reset the TPMS right from your screen. Also outlined in your owners manual.
