Hi all, I'm so excited! Placed an order for a new Z4 M40i (thundernight + ivory), upgrading from a '22 430i convertible. This is my first M model and my first rear-wheel drive car. Tell me everything I need to know and everything I will love about it!

I am waiting for mine to get through the build process. This will be my 4th one since 2005.
I applaud your choice of colors. I was unable to convince my wife to agree to Thundernight. Went with Skyscraper Gray and Magma.

Thanks! The thunder night color is my reason for getting it, I saw it and just had to have it. Mine is still at order received. I've been checking it every day, order was placed on the 4th.

Congrats on your new toy, the color definitely makes a statement!

You may wish to save $500 on the wireless charging option which has had too many issues reported on this forum. Do a search and you will find numerous posts about overheating.

Instead you may wish to add the active cruise control for $550 which I really wanted but couldn't get on my 2022 because the car was already at a dealer without it and I didn't want to wait for a new factory build.

Also consider the BMW all weather rubber floor mats that are great looking and will protect your carpet from the elements that you will track into your car. In my opinion, these mats give the interior a sleek, hi tech look.

Active Cruise Control is so so so worth it. And I also have wireless charging but haven't had any issues in the week or so I've had the car, but also it's been pretty cool out. The other plus with the Wireless charger is that I believe it is still the only way to get BMW Digital Key where you can use your phone/smartwatch to unlock and start your car, which is super cool. My partner just doesn't carry a key and will use her phone instead.

I have these in my 430 and LOVE them. I didn't see it as an option though. Is it something I have to ask the dealer for?

I have the active cruise control on my 430 now and haver never used it. Its not a daily driver for me, it's my fun car so when I'm driving I want to actually drive it lol.

I didn't know that about the digital key, but if that's true I'm glad I got it. I have a magnet wallet attached to my phone for my drivers license and CC so I don't have to carry a purse or wallet and would love to not have to carry a key. Women's pants don't have great pockets lol.

Unless something changed, you don't need the wireless charger to have the digital key. The digital key was part of the "Comfort Access" entry. If you don't have the wireless charger, the area where it would be has an NFC symbol on it for use with the key. If you do have the charger, there is also a battery symbol on the pad as well.

I am speaking from the 3 series here, but I assume it would be the same on the Z4.

You're right, looks like it's changed for the '23 models. For the '22s there was an $80 credit for "Digital Key Delete" if you didn't get the charger, I think due to chip shortages. Doesn't seem to be the case with the '23s currently though.

Anyone asks me what it is I say its a Z4 M40. Says so right on the trunk lid.

Julie, like everyone else, I’m excited for you. I also want to see pics after delivery. In addition to the all weather mats, I recommend you buy an aftermarket glass wind deflector to replace the mesh. I had mine waiting for delivery day and it’s so much nicer for rear visibility, top up or down.

Where'd you get it? the glass wind deflector. Removable?

Ordered and shipped from dÄHler. Yes, removable. They were great to work with and TÜV compliant while I’m here in Germany. I believe there’s other companies out there offering similar. Functional and just looks better, IMO.

Digital Key depends on what gets left out of the build. If you don't have the charging tray I don't think you can start the car.

My M4C was built without a charger & am pretty sure I don't have the DK. Will need to take a look.

Z4 M40 has a charger that I don't use as it cooks the phone in the summer.

The operating instructions I saw said to put the phone on the charger then press the start button:

◼ Digital Key
Go keyless with your
compatible smartphone or BMW Key Card
substituting for your vehicle's key fob.

Simply hold it to the door handle on the
driver's side to lock and unlock or, to start
the engine, you can place your device in the
wireless charging tray or smartphone
cradle.
