So it’s all free for HBO Max subscribers or we need a subscription and then pay per movie? Sounds like the latter in the range of $30 or so per movie.

I didn't read anything that would indicate a additional premium charge due these movies. Just a regular subscription. Which will surely cause tens of thousands to sign up!

Local AMC theater is freaking out over this. I suspect that building will be up for sale soon.

Honestly, I’m surprised with all the streaming services and quality of home theatre experience that anyone even goes out to a cinema anymore. The hassle, crowds, etc. just ain’t worth it.

I'm lamenting the over emphasis on streaming. Those of us that have put money and effort into our home rigs don't want compressed streams. Unfortunately, Redbox is it for those of us that care about having the full quality experience other than just blindly buying the movie and hoping you like it after spending the cash.

I am one of those who invested heavily in my Home Theater.
Although I hear you about the quality of streaming vs Blu Ray, 4k, etc.
I have ZERO desire to return to the Theaters until a "prolonged absence of COVID-19 has been demonstrated. I will accept 1080p and regular Dolby Digital.
But that is why I appreciate NETFLIX! Everything is in Dolby Atmos at least.

I'm not crazy about going to the theater either. Many times I find the sound to be just loud, distorted, and annoying. I've said numerous times that I'm astonished why people think loud is good.

But on the flip side, people are herding into a model with streaming that is setting a dangerous precedence towards content control and lack of quality. In the past, there were multiple venues to gain access to physical media. That's all but dried up now. The only option for physical rental is Redbox. If you want to purchase said movie, your options are starting to dry up there too. With physical box stores, there are really only three options: Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Walmart has announced that they won't carry specific 4k titles unless they meet a specific minimum price point. And even with those options, the amount of physical media they have on the shelf dwindles yearly. Which then leads to Amazon being the only option.

And it doesn't end there. The number of spinning disc players have also dwindled. When you look at a very well respected company such as Oppo Digital going out of business, that should throw up warning flags to everyone that cares about maintaining quality in the media they purchase and control over said media.

All of these moves are steps towards the computer software licensing model. Before you know it, you'll have to pay each time for any time you play a movie on a different TV.

That is unfortunately the trend and business model now. I work in tech and every company that sells SW is doing exactly that.

I expect Paramount, Sony, Universal to follow along soon... Or they will simply sellout to Netflix and Amazon.

Sign me up! I don't have to store media just to have it scratch itself? I don't have to pay $30 to watch a BluRay once, just $2-$5 instead?

I am hoping that by the time they kill 4K blu ray, that streaming quality has caught up. 4K HDR Dolby Atmos on Netflix is just not the same as 4K Blu Ray. I don’t know how I feel about watching Matrix 4 in less than perfect streaming quality. I will go to the theater.

I’ve been watching Game of Thrones 4K on disc recently. It blows me away. The Dolby Atmos overhead effects are incredible - almost overdone, but I love it.

4K Blu-ray’s might become collectible. Tenet 4K steelbook and LOTR/Hobbit steelbook are sold out near me for the foreseeable future and people are scalping them on eBay.

Neither do I. It's called Redbox. I pay a max of $2.12 for uncompressed BluRay. Many times, I pay less due to coupon codes or rent one get one free promos. If I decide to buy a Bluray/4k, it's certainly not $30. So you're just exaggerating.

Those that are streaming, how much data do you all consume in a month? The reason I ask is on another thread, I brought up Comcast's move to data cap pretty much all of their service plans with a 1.2TB per month max. If you go over, you're hit with a $10 per 50GB of usage up to a maximum of $100 extra for the overage charges. Or you can pay $30 a month to go unlimited. And before you all say, that $30 extra a month isn't that big a deal, it's the whole death by a thousand cuts. It's $30 now. What will it be in the future? Comcast can raise rates for unlimited data, your service plan, or both. Can't imagine how much data gets consumed on a 4k/HDR stream.

Y'all must have some crummy theaters....

Have been going, will continue but I am snob. It must be a CINE1 theater from Harkins.
