2023 Z4 M40i Tail Light Description

I’m unable to find any definition for the rear lights on my 2023 Z4 M40i.
Left/Right tail lights I understand
Is the center trunk lip light a brake light or lit always?
Is the bottom center an additional backup light or is it part of the parking light function?

Strange I can’t find a simple diagram anywhere in the BMW User Manual.

Center trunk lip is a brake light. Bottom center lamp is the reverse lamp.

Since we are talking tail lights, do the euro versions get a rear fog light somewhere? I thought that was required in Some countries. There are reflectors down low, left and right.

I believe they do. I've seen videos of the Euro version on YouTube. They have an additional button on their light switch panel that seems to be for a fog light as well.

Correct. I’m here in Bavaria and the Euro spec have amber turn signals. I think it looks really cool, but maybe the Germans here think my US spec red turn signals look cool too.

Why would they make different lights for the US? Amber are perfectly legal, or is there some obscure government manufacturing requirement?

There’s a bunch of weird US laws regarding lighting, so I’m sure it has something to do with that.

Yeah it’s weird. In Europe it’s only like a small strip on the bottom that lights up for the turn signal. Here in the US it’s the entire light that flashes

I would think that having the entire light flash is more visible and effective.

That’s exactly the issue. There is a minimum requirement of light output that has to occur when you flash a turn signal.

On my A5, the turn signal illuminated in a pattern from the center to the edge, where the center would light up first and sweep to the outside. But because that’s not considered enough output in the US, there was a secondary solid light that would come on as well. In Europe and other places, it was just that sweeping light that would illuminate. IMO it looks much better that way.

Thanks. That is way cool. I really appreciated the rear fog when I lived in Germany. Used it a lot.

I wonder if we can get a mod for that here in the US.
