Post-PDC Route

Hi,

We plan a PDC in September to collect our new Z4 m40i. We will be driving back to the Dallas area. I'd like to detour a little north for a more scenic route rather than just a bunch of straight line highways. Maybe drive through the Deal's Gap (Tail of the Dragon), etc. We will probably return via Nashville/Memphis/Little Rock.

Has anyone done that route from the BMW Performance Center? In particular, can anyone recommend a good place to stop for the first night? The PDC should end mid afternoon. I'd like to get a little bit of a start in the right direction rather than head back to Greenville. But I'd like to overnight somewhere before we get the the Deal's gap area. I'd rather catch the twisties in the daytime, and we may be tired from the PDC driving events. Should we stay in Spartanburg or is there a good stop a little further along?

Not exactly an answer to your question, but here are some other roads to catch/consider:

1. Blue Ridge Parkway - just drive north from Greer and catch the BRP near Asheville and go west to Cherokee
2. 28 to 129 (The Dragon)
3. Foothills Parkway
4. Cherohala Skyway
5. Wayah Road
6. Little River Gorge Road

Also, the historic Tapoco Lodge is a great place to stay basically at the foot of The Dragon.

This was my reply to a similar PDC driver question except he was going north.

""Good plan is to run the whole Tail Of The Dragon - Cherohala Skyway Loop

The Dragon section is only 11 mile long & will take 30 minutes plus or minus.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt @ Tail Of the Dragon/Killboy gift shop in Deals Gap.

Cool overnight stay Dragon City Resort (Formally Dragon Pitt Inn) right on the Dragon. There are a number of hotels/motels close to the loop. Most are good for an overnight stay. There are a lot to choose from.

My Cobra group tries to go about twice a year. Best times if you have the option of choosing are fall & spring as it cuts down on the traffic.

Lots of PCD deliveries fall outside of that time frame the but its still a fun experience.
