Expensive Headlights

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Someone backed into me a couple of weeks ago. They broke one headlight, but only the plastic cover, the headlight itself still works.

I just got the price on a new replacement, $3000!!!

Yes, insurance is supposed to cover this but they want to pay for a salvaged light at $1800. I wanted to use a BMW certified body shop but they won't install salvaged parts. To top it off all the body shops are backed up into May, June and even July.

It is turning into a painful experience.

Lord have mercy. I'm not sure about Colorado, but Texas Insurance laws allow the owner to go to whatever place and choose parts. You may want to do a little research to hold your insurance company accountable.

Sorry for your damage.

Best I can tell, we have a right to choose body shop but don't have a right to insist on new parts.

I work in the automotive supplier industry and supply parts to a major manufacturer of lighting systems for many companies. Headlights are far more complex than they used to be. That said, they do not cost anywhere near 3000.

You need to read the fine print of your policy on whether or not you can insist on new OEM parts.

many years ago I had a roof slashed on a 325i convertible and my insurance company tried to get me to approve an after market rag top replacement instead of an OEM BMW top. I was victorious in that battle.

3K. That's a lot, but a thousand is probably because 'BMW' (I know what I'm potentially getting into). I have a Fiat, currently, and a new light was $1400. For a Fiat...

That definitely more than sucks, though. It's a tragedy that we can't have and keep nice things.

BMW Part Prices

With the prices of BMW parts it wouldn't take a ton of damage to have the car totaled! Safelite damaged my infotainment screen while replacing my windshield. Their insurance paid $4,400 to have the screen replaced. Unbelievable!

I've seen some posts on Reddit where professional thieves are popping out the infotainment screens and steering wheels (?!). They aren't snipping any wires - just detaching the component wiring clips. The removal only takes a couple of minutes. Scary. With all the part shortages (touch screens) it will take months to get the replacement parts to get the car back on the road. Not going to stop me from road-trippin' but I may not sleep as soundly.

ouch!

you really dont need a body shop to change out a headlight assembly. Why not just have the dealer do it?

Service dept. hourly for labor is likely higher than Certified Collision Center.

More damage than just headlight, minor finder damage and another piece.
