Buying a Laptop

I'm trying to get some opinions about purchasing a laptop. I will use it mainly for internet, watching movies, word processing, power point and other basic stuff. It will not be used for gaming. I am in the military and travel to some pretty spartan places some durability is an issue.I will keep it for a while so I don't mind getting a good one that will not be outdated in 2 months.

Any ideas on makes, models, prcessor speed, momory etc. would be great.

Panasonic Toughbook withstands almost anything, my Lenovo X61 is pretty durable as well. I also have an Apple MacBook Pro, and it's far from durable. Decent computer but will fall apart if not taken care of.

Processor speed, anything 2.X GHz Core 2 Duo would suffice, 2GB RAM and 7200RPM HD with whatever size you think you need.

You're in the military, not in coffee shops.

Don't get a Macbook.

+1. You just need some $3-400 machine. Don't buy an Acer, they suck. HP, Compaq, Toshiba, even Dell should work fine.

Skip the Dell. My work laptop is a Dell and it's got to be the most fragile laptop there is. In fact, many people in my company have them and the number of problems and complaints are off the charts. Very flimsy machine...

I don't mean to assume, but most of the time when I hear poeple complaining about the frailty of thier computers, and how they always break or don't work properly it can be chalked up to user error or misuse.

If you want the latest and greatest laptop, with current high end parts. Its going to carry with it a bit of fragility. Most laptops can take some bumps here and there. But if you flat out drop it, only a very select few laptops will be able to take any number of those types of hits. And laptops in this category typically don't have the top of the line, latest and greatest components. (Not bad components mind you, but average in terms of current availability.)

I've had a few Dell laptops, and I've never experienced any issue with them at all. I also had an IBM laptop that I just dropped into a packback with no extra padding and it seemed to last quite a while with no problems.

Also, just like in cars sometimes there are lemons.

You can find crazy deals on laptops with today's economy I would check CNet for the best prices.

Of course, there is not enough information about your budget, etc. But I suppose you should use any site where you can compare different models. for advertising purposes, I will not say what kind of resources but it’s easy for you to find if you drive a few words into Google. there you can configure different filters: weight, screen size, price, battery life - select the one suitable for you and see what you like

If you don't want the size/weight of a ruggedized laptop, then I highly recommend getting a ThinkPad X1 Carbon. They're lightweight yet built for heavy use. I've pretty much used ThinkPads since 1999 and they have never let me down. They're tough units, still are even after Lenovo bought the brand from IBM. If the X1 is too small for you, then get the ThinkPad T series.

my work laptop is a Dell XPS and it's phenomenal for its lightweight, speed, and quality.

We just bought a new home/family laptop and the family is all loving it.

Sounds like an ipad pro with tough case is more applicable here.

Get a keyboard for when needed.

Laptops are going to be fragile and should be handled with more care.
