He's holding the leg up initially when he gets up from rest, but eventually puts it down after walking around for a few minutes, though I don't know how much weight he places on it obviously.

I think if I could prevent him from pulling and doing sprints, the tear could scar down enough to provide the support he needs, but that is more difficult than it sounds, he pulls when I take him for walks even if I shorten down the lead to my side just because he's excited initially, then he walks fine after a few minutes of pulling, but that is enough to inflame it again. Hard to fault him for being excited.

Anyways, we'll see - not going to imminently put him down, just hope he doesn't injure the other leg. Maybe with weight loss and that he'll heal up! Certainly hope so, it would bother me to put him down, but not $7K worth for a procedure that isn't guaranteed to fix things...just seems like a money grab to me.
There's gotta be some sort of soft cast or wrap you can put on the leg to immobilize the joint. Even if it's just for walks when he's getting exciting an pulling. Something to keep it from re-tearing like you suspect is happening.

We spent $13,500 on 1 dog and 2 cats last year. $7500 of that was for an ER visit. If this happened early in our life, the pets would either hack it without this expensive care or we would put them down. We did not have $13,500 to spend on an animal back then. We do now, so we spend it, although I have thought about accidentally leaving the back door open.

We now average $500 / month on medications, special food and grooming. That doesn't include pet sitting when we travel. We will always have a pet, but never 3 of them again.

Surgery is several thousand...I think they were guessing around $6K or so if I remember correctly when I asked. And even then, no real guarantee that he'll be back to normal. So far as I'm concerned, surgery isn't happening. My wife might bend me, but right now we agree no surgery.

If it came down to putting him down, she might not be able to not try surgery first. I would though.
Try a stem cell injection and immobilize it as much as possible. Human works fine.

Crazy. Our Mini-Schnauzer has the same hedgehog toy.

Great looking dog. Ours is a boy as well, he's a mischievous and conniving little thing! Brings a smile to my face everyday.

I....don't even know if they do that for humans up here, let alone dogs....but I don't know much when it comes to medicine. That's my wife's area. I might google it, but can't imagine it is cheap if it is available.

I've thought about just buying some tensor bandages and crap and wrapping his leg up, but I would think I would need to know how to wrap properly. Maybe I'll tap my neighbour and see if he can do it, he's a physiatrist and his wife does sports rehab...probably they know more than me.

Take a look here. Search in your area.

This is what I was going to suggest - find somebody who knows basic physical therapy tactics that can apply it to your dog (some injuries you want to immobilize, some it is the worst thing for). You might also call around or go online to try to find a Vet that specializes in ortho injuries and rehab. I'm near to Cornell U, and their Veterinary program does all kinds of high-tech human medicine stuff for animals. Probably too far for you to travel, but if you have a university with a vet program nearby they may also be willing to do the work as a training case.

Sucks to see him like that, worried the other back leg might go and we'd have to put him down which I really don't want to do.

Surgery is too expensive. We are trying a weight loss regimen and keeping him on leash to limit the bursts of speed which I think is what keeps him triggering the tear.
Check out orthodog.com, if you haven't already. You may find some less expensive alternatives and ideas. Swimming is actually a great therapy for doggie joints.
The surgeries listed on the site sound a lot cheaper than you are running into up there.

We started giving our 18 year old Maine Coon Cosequin for Cats for about 3 weeks ago as he has really been slowing down due to age and joint problems.

I was skeptical, but heard good things. After less than two weeks on it (mixed into his food) he is running/jumping around the house like a kitten again.

The change was unbelievable and it's very cheap when ordered from Chewy.

Thanks for the tip - I'll check that out. Although, she's always been really chill.

Yeah....he's always been really laid back. I always told my wife that if a cat could smoke pot...it would be him. You could set a bomb off behind him and it wouldn't phase him. He would just slowly turn around and look at you like "what's up with that"?

But he has slowed down as he is a big cat, and we noticed some mobility issues. After a couple weeks of that stuffed sprinkled on his foods...he's actually playing chase with our mini-schnauzer.

He probably does, you just haven't busted him yet.

That's really cool that he's so energetic now. Had a cat years ago that that wouldn't have been a welcome development. He was a trouble-maker. The friskier he was, the more shit got wrecked. Tipped over the Christmas tree twice, before we moved it onto the front porch. Ate rubber bands if he found them lying around.
