If the new Z4 looks like the render, it won't boost Z4 sales much.
It actually looks a little mid-2000s retro, really.

That emblem does look a bit lost. I think there were two recent cars that wore side scuttles well.

Nothing will boost Z sales. It's lost. It's not going to out sport a 718 and it's not going to out estrogen a TT. No point really, should put their money into making their EPS work and finding some mechanical lsd's for cars with 300+ lb ft of torque.

And it's not going to "out-style" an F-type.

I hope its light like the z3 and first gen z4. The e89 suddenly gained about 450lbs compared to those.

Poorly written, but sort of the the right idea. He should have said, "...uses even numbered product classes for two-door models".

Although it is true that not every even numbered moniker consists only of two-door vehicles (due to GC and GT models), it is also true that there are no two-door models beginning with an odd number.

Agree - at least not to where Z sales were in the best years of the in 90's or 00's. However, by working with Toyota they were able to make the business case to keep it alive. Modest sales are no doubt expected. I am more curious about the Toyota model and how it will be positioned for success in the marketplace.

The E93. I also like the last Z4. Also the new Miata RF is pretty sharp looking.

Absolutely agree on the last one, but violently disagree on the E93. A little bit of it was the chrome window trim even on M3's, but it still just looks like a hot chick in a trucker hat.

To sell well, I think the car needs to be better than its rivals in terms of:
  1. Performance,
  2. Looks, and
  3. Price

IMHO BMW is likely to hit the target on looks - I love my E85 and I think the E89 is a great looking car. Re the performance aspects, well, after the E89, I'm not sure there, but reports of testing against Boxsters are cause for at least some optimism - and it does appear that BMW / Toyota is taking the time to develop the car and get it right. With respect to price, I think BMW must be aggressive there to win over customers who would otherwise see a Z4 as a second rate performer and buy the competition's offering. I recall lots of commentary that the E89 was a pricey item for what it offered. Anyway, we'll see. Fingers crossed.

And Benz has a lock on the German convertible coupe market anyway.
They always have.

I test-drove a Z4 years ago on a Susan B. Komen "Drive for the Cure."
It felt like a BMW-engined motor boat.

Bet it wasn't a Z4 M. That's a whole different story.

I always love the posts from those that "took it for a test drive". I've owned two Z4's, still have one of them, along with an F80 M3 and a C63S AMG Coupe.

The E89 is lacking nothing more than a mild tune, suspension tweak, and removal of those run flats.

But I'll consider the source as a look at your history of posts is critical of just about everything...

Ditto - and to be frank, I don't get the lack of love for the E89, particularly in 35is form. Its an incredible looking car with plenty under the hood.

I owned a 1996 Z3 and a 2010 Z4 3.0s. They were fun cars and I wouldn't describe either as a "motor boat." But I defer to the guys who hopped into one for a few minutes. They are the true experts.

I quite like the E89 as well, just forever bitter it didn't get an M variant or 6MT on the 35is. Not putting the v8 in there was a giant missed opportunity, could've been an all-time great for the fans

I absolutely agree. In view of the criticisms that the E89's performance was soft, I think BMW really dropped the ball in not having an M version. I can't imagine that the M division's engineers weren't up to the task of designing a suitable E89M.
