Top Latch, not secure warning message.

Just started getting a message saying latch not secure. Top seems to go down fine don’t hear or see any issues. Goes up just fine and I get the message/sound indicating that top closed successfully. Just made an appointment for the dealer this week. Just wondering, is it safe put the top down while waiting to bring it in for my appointment or am I gonna be like a a dragster deploying the parachute down the freeway?

Hard to say, but personally I wouldn’t risk it. Unless it’s a faulty sensor giving a false signal, it would be a risk, and for what?

This happened to me multiple times on my S30i. No reason. Hasn't happened on the M40i. Yet.

I had this happen yesterday. I opened and closed the top a couple of times, turned the car off then back on, reopened and closed, no bad message.

I guess if I would leave top down all the time I might not get the message?

Just got an update from the dealer this morning.

“The technician located a missing sensor magnet, which reports to the vehicle where the position of the top is. We are waiting on BMW technical services for the next step of repair. Hopefully we can just replace the sensor”

Glad it’s just a sensor issue.

They thought it was a mag switch, but it turned out it was not . Service manager contacted me this afternoon and said it looks like BMW North America is involved and the dealership and BMWs engineering team are trouble shooting with the dealer tech. it seems the conclusion is probably they will need to install a new top saying it’s a possible engineering defect. I went on Reddit and have seen a couple others that have gone this path. I hope as others have stated this doesn’t take two months to get a top from Germany. Ugh…

Not sure how old your car is, but if it's more than 2 years, I'd take a "free" warranty replacement top any day of the week.

Argh, sorry it’s turned out to be a bigger job.
I’m a bit surprised tbh, any manufacturer of a convertible knows that the robustness of the soft top mechanism is of paramount importance

Well. It feels like nothing can be really repaired any more on these convertible roofs, only full swaps to keep the integrity. We had a MB SLK350 and they had a known delaminition of hardtop issue and replaced under warranty on 5 year old car.

It’s a ‘22 and that’s exactly how I’m looking at-just the time it’s gonna take to get the new top is the only letdown hopefully they can speed up leadtime.

Just be patient as it is definitely worth the wait if they are replacing the top under warranty.

I assume the car is still driveable and not at risk of the top flinging open when driven?

Yes, the car was drivable, but I didn’t want to risk driving it with a top down and cause more potential damage. The car has been at the dealer for almost a week and from what I hear the dealer techs are working with BMW engineering to come to conclusion on how to fix it but they’re leaning towards a new top. Not sure why they have to think about it for so long, but I’m hoping to have a resolution in the next week or two but have a nice 2024 430 x drive convertible that they gave me to drive until, it’s taken care of so I’m appreciative of that.

Update.. there is no update lol…A little over a week at the dealer and still no solution. Dealer shop foreman trying to escalate with BMW engineering to get them to respond. This is getting frustrating.

A friend of mine had an issue with his M3 Competition that was at the dealer and he became frustrated with their lack of action. He then called BMW directly and that lit a fire under the service department’s butt and things started moving quickly with his repair.

Don’t be afraid to call BMW directly and complain. 👍🏻

This is why I would have taken the car back until they had a part for replacement. Otherwise your car is banging around the lot for no reason.

If I heard/saw the top mechanism latching into place up and seemingly securely when down….id be enjoying the car as normal. Would not leave it with a dealer while they wait around. But that’s just me and I don’t trust people 😂

Yeah, the only reason I’m not going stir- crazy is they got me in a courtesy car/lonaer, a ‘24 430i xdrive convertible. Although not as fun I’d rather have this than nothing and spin the tires and put the miles on their loaner with the top down then with me not being able to put my top down I guess but as others have said, I’m going give BMW corporate a call and try to push this.
