Retuning to the "fun" car scene

Tomorrow we should be picking up a 2021 Z4 M40i, have loved the styling, performance and relative uniqueness of this generation Z4.

Been a few years since having something fun in the garage and since moving from the Northeast to SC, a fun car can be used year round. Pretty pumped!

I had a 2013 Miata power hard top for about 7 years and really enjoyed it, but for this go around needed some more versatility.

If anyone sees a Misano Blue Z4 w/Cognac interior along coastal Carolina, might just be me! There is a red 30i around Myrtle Beach I see occasionally, definitely not many around. This area is dominated by Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros.

I’ve had some quick cars before (C6Z, 3000GT TT) among others but having open air just makes driving more fun imo. No doubts I will enjoy the Z4.
The only thing I have not had is an automatic in previous sports cars, so how much that detracts will be interesting to see. From all accounts this auto is VERY good.

Hands down the best car I've ever owned. Congrats, glad you get some top down weather for little bit!

The combination of power, looks, comfort, and mpg put this car far above anything else out there today, in my opinion.

Congratulations! Sport individual and manual mode aren’t a 6 speed, but still fun with the exhaust pops and bangs

Nope, not just you. I don't see the fun in a manual. I think the people who really STICK by the manual is just because of a bandwagon, not because it's actually better. :P (I'm about to start a fight here haha) STAY ON TOPIC!

Paddle shifters, all the fun of having that control without the third pedal.

The manual is more engaging, but the ZF8 auto is quicker. The gearing makes an impact, too. I think I've forgotten when I'm allowed to downshift to second given RPM limitations ... Definitely going to be a SHIFTY decision either way. The biggest bummer about the BMW 6 speed manual is the top gearing, running 3000-3500 rpm on the highway at 70-85 mph.

They really need that Porsche cruising top gear.

My current Boxster is a 5sp MT and cruising in the 3K rev range at highway speeds does get old after a while.

Especially with fake engine noise. So you'd want to be in comfort mode which minimizes or eliminates that, but then what if you want to be in sport mode while at speed? This is where it really becomes aggravating.

Finally back home after a 4hr drive to Taylor BMW and 4hr back in the 2021 Z4. Being new to BMW it was a little overwhelming with the tech initiation lol.

The drive home was fantastic, drop top the whole way. Very comfortable at 70mph+ with windows up, have not done a full throttle mash cause even with 50-75% it pulls hard imo, very quick downshifts and it picks in speed in no time from a roll. Hit the “wife” limiter a few times taking off/on ramps. Super fun ride.
Decided to try ECO mode once on I20-I95 and was stunned to see it returning 37mpg for 100 miles of highway driving. ECO mode did make it feel very slow at stop lights so will never use it around town. These brakes are super touchy/grabby, much more delicate modulation needed.
We love the car, so far 2 thumbs up!

Try using Adaptive mode, I have gotten 35.5 mpg on 100+ mile trips. It also has improved my mileage in local street driving.

The technology can be intimidating at first. You do need to sit with it and play around - not to ‘learn’ how to use it, but to see all the things that you can do.

Coming from the Mazda system to the BMW is a huge step up in features and functionality.

The brakes are great, however. You’ll probably feel the grabbiness when coming to a slow stop; I don’t think it’s the brakes as such, but the engine wanting to ‘go’. Coming to a ‘swift’ stop doesn’t seem to exhibit that behavior. Perhaps that’s just me, though.

For sure the Mazda system was simple in comparison, and yes I noticed it was touchy at the low speed versus coming in a little higher while braking.

Just a tip. I leave my car in comfort or adaptive until the engine and oil temps warm up. Check out the sport display for oil temp. Once it’s warmed up, I pop it into sport individual mode which for me is sport plus engine, comfort steering, comfort suspension, comfort transmission (IIRC). And of course I turn off traction control to allow for some wheel spin. This will not turn the system totally off, so you shouldn’t be able to spin the car without the Nannies saving you. But it will allow you to accelerate more quickly without interfering.

Car warms up faster in comfort mode

So that’s actually smart of you

Took a couple pics, nothing fancy after just run to Costco. Had a nice F-Type in the rear view following on the drive home for a few miles.
