Yeah, it's screwing with my decision on being an early adopter or not.

Don't know what your 135 has but my 135is 6MT came with a very aggressive factory muffler.

No matter what you do short of punching holes in it, will the Z4 ever come close to it without a exhaust system change. I just run the Z4 with the flap fuse out so it stays open all the time in any mode.

It growls, pops etc but without the intensity my 135is had. None of my BMW's all with factory performance exhausts including the 335IS & M4C are near the same output level.

435 & 440 MPE

The other stuff mentioned by the guys all goes down to personal wants. Its not a once size fits all car.

For me its the perfect 2 seater for where I am now. In the distant past I expect my choices would have been & were different.

Just a comment on resale....have never considered it. I buy cars to enjoy. Have had winners & losers in the 2 seat or performance resale arena its just the cost of having fun.

The BMW performance exhaust.

I meant that the MHD had levels that could be set, burbles anywhere from aggressive to light to off and a few steps perhaps in between.

Wasn't sure if similar options were available from them for the Z4.

Agreed, though for those of us who plan to keep it for 5 years or more it's fortunately less of a factor.

This! We tend to keep our vehicles a minimum of 5 years/100k miles, (hence usually going with extended manufacturer warranties as well, though that’s certainly its own can of worms of pros/cons). I feel if someone cycles through their vehicles every ~3 years, those folks are likely leaning towards leases already. Those who purchase, whether via cash (I wish lol) or finance are planning for longer term. Cars, IMO, aren’t generally meant to be an investment. That’s what my index funds in my 401k are for. A car is for transportation, fun (if lucky anyway), and if you benefit at the end when you eventually sell, it’s just an added perk after you’re done enjoying it. But I don’t give much thought in our purchases to resell regardless. It’s a car, not an investment, (usually anyway).

Edit; or hell, we could have another worldwide pandemic, causing all types of FUBAR, and take advantage of supply/production issues again. We personally made bank on both an old ‘15 Honda Accord Touring Hybrid as well as a ‘13 Buick Lacrosse (no judgement on that one lol). Though, I pray to whomever/whatever may exist something like that doesn’t occur again anytime soon for all of us, profit be damned. Point is, ya just never truly know…

And then there is a matter of color: Considering that I can't unsee the flesh wound like side vents (raw tuna steak cut casually in the middle), the only option for me is black. Very black with shadowline to hide that monstrosity away. But can a roadster be black? I always thought of them in British Racing Green...

With respect to comfort, I drove 800 miles home from picking the car up in Tulsa (500 miles day 1 and 300 miles day 2). Most of day 2 was with the top down while most of day 1 was in the rain and on TERRIBLE Oklahoma and Arkansas roads.

While I was tired by the end of the trip, I could certainly have done more the next day. This would not have been the case in my '19 440GC. That car was good for maybe 250-300 miles a day and that was it. It had the fat boy seats and they were terrible. The Z seats are MUCH better.

Now as to value, I don't think looking at depreciation over the past couple of years is particularly fair, especially as of late.

Couple of things here:
1. For anyone that bought in the past 2 years, there is a VERY high likeihood that you had to over pay to get the car. I know I did and I got $8k off on a spotless car with 2.3k miles.
2. The car market is resetting pretty quickly right now and most dealers are scared to put too much money in a lot sitter.
3. I say lot sitter as its winter time and convertibles don't sell well in the winter. I think we'll see a bit of an uptick in values in the next couple of months as the weather improves, or at least an uptick compared to comparable coupes.
4. I almost bought an M4 Convertible instead of the Z. So I've been watching their prices as well. And while its a more expensive car for sure, the drop in FMV seems to have been about the same as the Z over the same period so as a percentage higher for the Z, but in real terms about the same. And again I think we'll see more moderation in the Z vs the M4 with weather improvement as the Z is so singularly focused in purpose.

Here is a dot plot of the BMW Z4 Roadster auctions of BAT. There were 72 auctions. All cars sold were pre-2009. It may suggest that your average Z4 buyer holds the car for a long time, making depreciation less of an issue.

The configurator has Alcantara as an option. That should be nice. Not as good as cloth but close.

It has alcantara in two places - top of seatback and door inserts… but the seats are mostly vernasca as are the center console and door armrests.

Speaking of wheels: why is that the base M3 can be had with 18", but M40i with the 20" as the smallest? Alexander the Great's chariot's had 50" wheels- is it an aspirational goal?

The M40i can definitely be had with 18" wheels (at least in AT form). Rumors are the manual will come with some package that will force 20" wheels in the back though, which is quite unfortunate.

I got the 18" wheels on my 2024 and am extremely happy I did (they ride well and look fantastic).

In the 19" wheel, they're available in 8.5, 9.0, and 9.5" widths. I chose 8.5 front and 9.5 rear, transferred the factory tires over to them. They're a bit more than 10 lbs per wheel lighter than the factory wheels.

I tried to insert a link but the link errors out so here are the details. I got these Forged One Competition FF10 wheels (Satin Graphite) at tirerack.com, shipped free to a local Discount Tire for installation.
