It happened today in 1986. Me and my best friend we're having lunch at my house, and I had turned on CNN and could not believe what had happened
(I went to a high school where we could leave campus for lunch).

I was home from Germany due to a family health issue and was watching my first live shuttle launch. I just sat there stunned when it happened. I remember my Mom crying as we watched the aftermath. Such a sad day.

I was in high school during launch, you could see the shuttle contrails from our location and then it break apart.

I was skipping gym at high school and was home watching it live. Man what a day I'll never forget. It's also my wife's birthday, so fortunately I never forget that either.

I was 10 years old. Elementary school and it snowed here that day so we were out of school. I was in my bedroom facilitating an ass-whooping for Duke and Gung-Ho by Destro, Zartan and Cobra Commander when my sister came in my room telling me about what had happened. We spent the rest of the day glued to the TV watching the news reports. I do remember that my grade school teacher had applied for the opportunity to be on the Challenger. I don't remember the details but apparently NASA wanted to send a teacher into space. I do remember how disappointed she was that she was not called upon, but I also remember her excitement for Christa McAuliffe who was the teacher on board.

I was home from work that day for some reason, I guess I was sick. I was watching it live. I couldn't believe what my eyes saw. It was one of those things that was hard to process at first. Like what did I just see. So sad.

My ship was heading back to port from a short couple day Exercise in the Atlantic. We were still miles from shore but just started to get tv reception in the ships lounge area. I was going to the head and passed the tube as it has just happened on the bad reception snowy tube. I wanted to stay longer and watch more what was going on but had to get back to work for the sea and anchor detail. One of those days we all remember sadly all to vividly.

I remember this like it was yesterday, so very sad.

I've seen Atlantis at Cape Canaveral and was so in awe of the size of it and thought of the Challenger while I was standing there, in one small moment it and all those on it can be gone.

I'm not sure if this made it over to the States but Ratcat released a single "Getting Away From this World" and the video was a homage to the crew of the Challenger. Worth a watch today!

I was at work in Los Angeles, at a company that had two divisions that made parts for the shuttles. So we were at once shocked by the explosion and tragedy and at the same time beginning to think through what might have happened and if any of our parts, manufacturing, etc might have contributed (did not, but we didn’t know that for quite a time). And then there was the realization that there wasn’t going to be any more of that business for a while. So many currents of information and emotion then.

I was standing outside on my front patio area about to leave for work, lived in Palm Beach County at that point in life, watching it. When I saw things go bad, I ran in and flipped the tv on to see what the heck happened. Drove about 4 miles to pick up a friend that car pooled with me, and you could still see the trails and point of explosion clearly. He didn't know about it until he walked out and I pointed to the sky. Remember it like it was yesterday, like 9-11, the Oklahoma bombing and a couple other things.

I recall some people (myself included) thought the explosion was part of the launch/journey. I was in grade school and I remember thinking was that supposed to happen or not?

I was in college and was shocked. The O-Rings were made in New Orleans which hit home for everyone here. I had a bunch of friends who worked for Olin and a few other suppliers and I was a Navy Co-op engineering student. It hit all of us massively. I felt ever worse because I harangued my mom for quite a while to become the first teacher in space but she refused to even apply. I'm glad she refused my suggestion.

RIP brave travelers.

Was watching it live in 3rd grade. Awful. Been to the memorial at Arlington. Bought a mission patch for Challenger and Columbia when visiting Kennedy space center a few years back. Sad day. Damn o ring.

I was in the fourth grade. We were on our way to lunch and our teacher said she had something very important to tell us when we got back. We were all worried that she was retiring or leaving...or sick.
When we got back to the room the AV equipment was set up and she told us about the tragic events that occurred. As a fourth grader it’s hard to process it all aside from “it exploded....people died” but definaltey a day burned into memory

I was asleep in my dorm room, having pulled a near-all nighter in the science lab.

My buddy across the hall barged in and woke me up since I had a television in my room.

We missed classes that day.

R.

PS: And here's a *very* sobering and chilling thought-- the astronauts? They were alive, and very possibly conscious.

All. The. Way. Down.

2 minutes, 45 seconds. On a ballistic trajectory from 65,000'.

Not good.

I was standing into my club that evening and had live TV on, was disco with vids into the mid 80ths. The crowd and I were watching the launch and the aftershock. Took the volume down and had nobody to ask to keep silent for a minute, you could hear a needle fall.
