They gave the weight of the "sDrive30i" as 3287, not the M40i, so the 4-banger Z4 with 255 hp is 313 lb lighter than an M2C with 405 hp. Or 163 lb lighter than an 'old' M2.

Seeing as a base 230i AT weighs 3411 and a base 240i AT weighs 3519 = 110 lbs between 4 and 6 cylinder versions.

So since they gave us 4cyl weight we can assume the M40i should be about 3400 lbs.

I don't get the ring time. The car is slower to 60 than either M2, with more HP than the base, but they're claiming a better ring time than the base M2. Doesn't make sense.

0-60 times aren't the end all be all, depends on traction. Seems as though the M2 hooks up better. 60-130 times are better telling of a cars horsepower.

I actually did that same thing but compared a 330i to a 340i and came up with 200lbs difference.

Actually looks more like 160lbs now that I take a second look. It's probably more realistic representation of the engine differences given that the M240i and 230i also have different sport trims. Hard to say what exactly the Z4 difference will be but it's not going to be as light as most of us thought, either way!

Honestly just did a quick google. Not sure if that's for the 1.9, 2.8 or 3.0. Either way, it, like all cars, have gotten fat.

Why does the 30i have wider track widths than the m40i?

Here we go the with this type of comment… So I'm assuming Ferrari stopped making great cars after the F40, Porsche after the 911 2.7 RS, etc?

Don't get me wrong, I above all love cars from days gone by (I think the pinnacle is 2008-2012; great mix of technology and advancement before the regulations imposed by governments started to adversely effect how they drove) but that doesn't mean they still can't build good drivers cars. There are lots of good drivers cars from the era after the E30. They're different, sure, (I don't like where we're going as you can probably judge from my above comment) but that doesn't mean for a car produced in today's environment it isn't a good drivers car compared to its peers.

Good catch! That is weird! I'd have to believe that's a typo and, if not, then that is really odd.

Yeah m40i should have wider tracks I suppose?

The "gross" weight is the max weight the car can take - its own weight plus passengers and cargo. So you'd want to compare the "curb" weights.

Excellent post! ... and the UK gets an entry level 2.0i, but all have the 8 speed auto as standard.

now I understand why it's faster than M2 around Nurburgring.
It's most likely lighter and got more tires. (245/265 vs 255/275)
Also, power is slightly more too.

If it was slower than M2, I would be surprised.

Curious what changes were made to the B58 from the M240 version for that extra HP.

And a piable suspension could play a bigger role at the ring.

Huh? Gross weight is not the weight. Totally different than curb weight.

Actually BMW have done a decent job at keeping the weight down. 3200+ lbs for the new Z4 is pretty good. Lighter than the last Z4 and lighter than the M2 etc. the 6 cylinder Z3s we're close to 3000 lbs.

A shame about the pitifully generic styling though....and lack of manual.

Hadn't it been previously reported that the Z4 would get an optional MT, while the Supra would be auto-only?
