That is the 20i (no manual for any higher version anywhere).
Personally, I prefer the 40i with ZF 8 which is a great automatic transmission.

think i will be ok with my FIRST automatic
I am actually going to have my first automatic of my life (not including wife's cars/SUVs) and I think I will be ok. My one major complaint on the 2007 Z4 M Coupe was the transmission I thought was rubbery and not as direct as I would have liked. (2 of the best shifters ever were the Honda s2000 which reminded me of loading a bullet in a 22 it was that direct or close to that the Boxster). Both "click and go" in a way that just made me smile as you drive.
The new automatics apparently are really good now. I never thought I would say that...time will tell once I get the car and get to drive it under various conditions. But I understand the comment as there is something so fun about the pedals and winding a car up to the redline -ultimate control of the car. Haha....just writing that tells me maybe I will miss the manual afterall! Time will tell..... |

I have had both auto and manual over many years. During the times when I did not have a manual car I have ALWAYS missed it. Not everyday mind you, but many days. There is something so satisfying about engaging all four limbs and being so connected to the car that is missing in EVERY auto I have ever owned or driven - paddle shifters be damned!

8 is s slight understatement. To each their own. I get it. There are fewer and fewer of us that know how and enjoy driving a car that requires you to know how to drive a car. Before you know it we won't even be able to drive the new cars. This autonomous crap will take that away too. So, drive them while you can. Hopefully I die before autonomous driving strips us of the right.

Was sad to just sell it. One thing nice about the 1815 sold in total in NA (about 300 in Interlago Blue) was its uniqueness, especially here in the bay area. The resell value on it even w 100K miles was 26K on a 2007 which surprised the heck out of me. One reason I hesitated as the values have been increasing with so few on the road. Like missing an old girlfriend with a quirky personality who was the best "drive" of your life, if you knew how to drive and bring out the fun. Certainly more fun than the heavy girl - I mean SUV.... 155mph, perfectly said. yes paddle shifters and electric golf carts taking over (as one of my local BMW-crazed friend calls them) and it will be sad when we are no longer truly driving. We are getting closer to those days already...

no I was responding to you and your comment. That should be obvious. Since this is Z4 thread about stick shift versions and that was a Z4 comment about a stick shift version and you aren't a Z4 owner suggest you get in the grocery getter and head on over to Target in you Sport Activity Vehicle. I am missing the old Z4 and cant wait for the new one to arrive!

It was obvious that you were commenting on a different car. Why would I go to Target because I don't have a Z4? That doesn't make any sense.

I do believe it is a great car. I am just sad that is will not be available with a manual transmission in any variant in the US market. I really would not want the 20i just to get it with a manual even if it was available in this market. But, if they would put a manual in the m40i, wow, that would really be a great and fun car to drive and I would go right out and order one tomorrow. You see, I sold my 2006 Z4M Roadster (6sp manual of course) and have regretted it. Far as I can tell (carfax) it is in someones collection or garage in the bay area not getting many miles on it - so at least it went to a good home. But sure do miss it.

To each their own; I laugh whenever people try to imply that people who want/drive an automatic are somehow unable to drive a manual or don't know how to do it properly.
Yes, it's too bad you no longer have the choice. I still have several manual transmission vehicles and yeah, I can drive (I've raced motorcycles since 1982).....but I would have gotten the ZF in the Z4 even if they offered a 6 spd; it's a fabulous tranny and I find the versatility of going between full sport paddle mode and regular auto mode to be very appealing. YMMV Dave |

Upshifts sound better with an automatic for the B58.
I test drove the M2 comp and Z4 M40i a few weekends ago. Around town, the m40i sounds a lot better. |
