Oil Evaporation?

Hey all. 2020 Hyundai Veloster needed a new engine at 5k miles - replaced under warranty after I raised holy hell. It was consuming a quart of oil a week, with no leaks and no evidence of smoke out the exhaust. Engine sent back to factory for analysis. I'll probably never hear what the story was - most likely rings or valve seals I'm guessing, but not enough to see smoke.

Service advisor's first response was "engine runs hot and evaporates oil". Which is a load of BS. I think. Isn't it? I mean at certain high temperatures I believe oil can evaporate, but:

a) - this is synthetic oil, so very low rates of evaporation
b) - this engine should not be running at those kinds of temps. Even my N54 and N55, which presumably run hotter than the Veloster 2.0, don't evaporate oil that I'm aware of.

Ok, so new engine installed. Flash forward two weeks, and the alternator comes loose - bolt fell out. Had to tow the car back to the dealership. I'm about to raise some real holy hell this time , but want to be armed with ammo for their "evaporation" story. Any info from you oil experts is appreciated.

You are correct, oil levels going down are not due to evaporation. After having owned BMWs, why did you buy this car?

without a real inspection of the engine things can be just assumed but lower viscosity oils evaporate faster than higher viscosity ones and i dont think you re pushing the engine that much to evaporate over long period of time like hours in high temps.. you can compare the noack volatility of the car's oil if its the highest on the market.. and since its summer any problem with cooling can increase this..

but probably somewhere in touch with high temps was wearing out inside the engine minor but still.. if its multiple this can increase oil lose pretty much.. or if the car is not being used that much having short trips generally ending before engines optimal temp and you have a long trip or pushing the engine it can affect as well.. with those conditions oil can be diluted with fuel which can cause this.. or you re not waiting engine to warm up before pulls that can affect as well without noticeable smoke from the exhaust.. if you really want to know the reason only you can do is to reach manufacturer persistently to share the result with you though it can take months but anyways you ll know.. but i guess high potentially the reason is premature wearing out in the engine..

Oil is not evaporating at that rate. Call the tech line for the oil you are using and ask them for a formal statement about it.

About the alternator bolt falling out... I personally wouldn't slam them for that. Of course it shouldn't have happened, was it sloppy ? I see it more as an oversight a mistake.

BS. All modern ICE vehicles have a crankcase evaporation system that prevents oil vapor from escaping directly to the atmosphere. That means the oil vapor reaches the atmosphere indirectly though the engine's combustion process.

So the engine just simply burns oil...

Good question. I bought it for my son as a graduation present. It's really a perfect car for him.

I have 700k miles of BMW in my driveway, including my son's old E46, and I'm running out of time to be constantly working on them.

I haven't bought a new car in decades - I hate paying all that initial depreciation. But he's headed to grad school and working, so I wanted to get him a new, dependable car. Ha!

<---goes to check gas tank. Phew! My gas is not evaporating!

That's a load of BS. Yeah, a statement from the oil company/email would be a good place to start.

Also, make sure you've written down the tech's statement or a summary of it, and signed it as your copy of their statement-accurate to the best of your ability. You need to start documenting who said what and on what day, etc. You need to show that they are throwing out BS diagnosis and accusations.

Oil doesn't just f*cking evaporate, that's WHY we use it in engines.

There IS some evaporative loss of oil but It shouldn't be so much that you'd notice significant consumption.

One of my co-workers had the motor seize at 50k miles on the turbo.
Thankfully I returned my son’s at lease end 3 years ago.

You get what you pay for.

I would not even consider a used one!

Solution: don't check the oil level.
