The RC-F can barely compete with the M3 let alone a GTR. Heck, this new Supra will run circles around a RC-F.

And yes, I have driven the RC-F on the street and on track. It's not a bad street car but it certainly is not a GTR killer.

Agree 100%. It's been many years since I last owned a MKIV Supra, and my current M4 is the only car I've owned since then that brought back those nice MKIV vibes.

Some of my favourite design elements of the concept were left out though. The bulging GT style fenders swooping in on the headlights were muddied and shrunken. The F1 style nose was turned into a grille. That huge awesome front splitter is only there in spirit. The large functional air dams and aero in the body were reduced in size too much. And while it's a minor things I hate the new side mirrors all the manufacturers seem to be using. I get that the concept mirrors weren't realistic, but a smaller mirror not unlike the e36m3 mirror would have looked nice.

There are other issues I have with it. But those were my main takaways. Makes me wonder what the feedback they got on the design and body aero was and why they changed it.

I still think it's a nice looking car! Will look mean in black.
I agree, those were definitely the features that stuck out to me as well. It looks like Toyota ditched any F1 connection for the Supra, and went out of their way to make it fit in with the current lineup (which is mostly to be expected). Maybe it wasn't formula 1 inspired, but to me there was definitely an open wheel race car style to it.

I still think it's great looking. I also, call me crazy, love bmw turbo engines. I'm also glad they didn't go upscale and price it out of range for it's fan base (mid 30's guys like me and older). I am somewhat bummed they didn't leave car seat space in the back in a 2+2 style.

But for 20k less than the bmw, while looking way better than the bimmer, I'm still excited we got this car. With no partnership, there is no new Supra.

It's a shame reality can be a bitch sometimes. Until then, the FD RX-7 will remain the best looking car to ever come out of Japan.

FD is definitely a designer's finest work when it comes to Japan. Hell even the 2000gt is remarkable next to this.

If an article a couple months ago I read that this BMW/Toyota relationship was the only reason we even still have a Z4 at all.

They sell so few of them that the only way the business case worked was if they shared development costs got volumes up by making two cars.

If that car has Toyota reliability instead of BMW reliability they'll sell lots of them, at least at first.

The market for two-seaters that size is limited.

The Toyota Supra's Chief Engineer Thinks It Could Run a 7:40 Lap at the Nurburgring

https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-sho...ring-lap-time/

Quote:
Tetsuya Tada says the automaker has not done a timed lap at the 'Ring, but speculates his car could handily beat the Z4's lap time.

Nurburgring lap times have become a crucial data point for high-performance vehicles. Automakers have claimed 'Ring lap records for everything from hybrid hypercars to front-drive hatchbacks and even SUVs.

So it's a little bit surprising that Toyota hasn't publicized an official Nurburgring lap time for the 2020 Supra. But at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada hinted at what he believes the new sports car will be capable of achieving at the 'Ring.

"We haven't had an official time attack yet," Tada told R&T through an interpreter. The engineering boss explained that the car would likely run into its 155-mph speed limiter on the Nurburgring's lengthy straightaway, hampering its lap time. "One day, perhaps, we cut the speed limiter and try the time attack," he said. "But even just driving it as it is, it's really fast. On the old course, it's very easy to break eights—7:50, 7:40. It will do that easily."

Compare that to the new BMW Z4, which was developed alongside the new Supra. The two cars share a platform, and their suspension and braking components are nearly identical. They offer the same 3.0-liter turbo straight-six engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, though the top-spec Z4 M40i makes 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft, compared to the Supra's 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft.

Tada says the hardtop-only Supra is lighter and more rigid than the soft-top BMW, which could explain how the Supra out-accelerates the Z4 (a 4.1-second 0-60 sprint, compared to 4.4 for the BMW). And while BMW has not claimed an official Nurburgring lap time for the Z4, German publication Sport Auto ran a 7:55 in a preproduction Z4 M40i.

Of course, there's only one way to find out what the Supra can do at the Nurburgring. Consider this our plea: Toyota, take it to the 'Ring for an official timed lap.

Toyota Won’t Offer Four-Cylinder Supra In The U.S.

Told, you so...

https://www.motor1.com/news/301249/t...r-cylinder-us/

Quote:
If you want a less displacement, buy a Z4.

The 2020 Toyota Supra stole the auto show this year in Detroit. The long-awaited coupe gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine in the U.S., good for 335 horsepower (249 kilowatts) and 365 pound-feet (494 Newton-meters) of torque. In Japan, the base Supra comes with a four-cylinder engine – but don't expect it to carry over here.

Speaking with Jack Hollis, Toyota's group vice president and general manager, at the Detroit Auto Show, he said the company has no plans to bring the four-cylinder Supra stateside. Toyota believes the current inline-six is the best engine for this car.

"I think it will be interesting to see, with the Z4 coming out with the 2.0-liter – and it's kind of interesting we have our inline six that's the same price as their two-liter – we'll see how that all works out. But no, we don't have a plan to bring the four-cylinder here."

The base four-cylinder Supra is good for either 194 hp (145 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm), or 255 hp (190 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, depending on the trim. For countries like Japan with strict tax laws on larger-displacement engines, it makes sense. But in the U.S., with the 86 and no restrictions on larger-displacement engines, Toyota doesn't see a business case for it.

"The good news is having a company that has that available, we could do so. But we made the choice with Tada Son to only bring [the Supra] out with the inline six – so we feel strongly that that's the right engine and right performance for us."

There is one way you can get that platform with a four-cylinder engine, though: Buy a BMW Z4. In the U.S., the base Z4 is powered by a 2.0-liter engine good for 255 hp (190 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. The four-cylinder Z4 and the six-cylinder Supra start at around the same price – $49,700 for the Z4 versus $49,990 for the Supra.

Rant inbound:

Why is everyone on social media screaming to put a 2JZ in the car?

Stock for stock, that motor makes less power than the B58.
It's also way heavier. Iron block vs aluminum.
Wiring would be a nightmare.

So what do you gain? The privilege of spending even more money to make it have more power than the B58? Clout? Being able to sleep tight knowing your Supra has a 2JZ?

The internet is freaking ridiculous. Apparently the B58 ecu has been tough to crack, but I've seen multiple 500whp dynos and this is just the infancy of the platform. It seems to take to mods somewhere between the level of the 55 and 54. Never thought I'd see the day where people would complain about a beautiful rwd turbo i6 that makes 500whp for a couple of grand and only costs 50k new. Dollar for dollar it's a far better value than the original Supra.

"Oh no, this 50k car comes with a 70k interior, Toyota is the worst!!!!"

I think the problem is that Toyota fanboys have long thought of their Supra as the "anti-German/anti-Yuppie" sports car that has a huge tuner community backing it up. Now that their new car is essentially a BMW, they're having a hard time digesting it.

Can you imagine if the next M3 was built by Audi, or even Porsche? Guys around here would go nuts.

I find it hilarious the press and fanbois are going goo-goo ga ga over the Supra unveiling and not a single thing was written about the Z4's shared platform, virtually the same car nearly 100% developed by BMW.

It's almost as if the Z4 was expected in the lineup and the Supra is some sort of magical car conceived by moving heaven and earth.

I get that, but there are so few complaints about the modern corolla/celica. At least this didn't come with a pathetic 150whp like the frs/86. And I wouldn't be shocked if audi built the next BMW, they already build everything else

Im assuming its also gonna have a BMW car key and wheels secured with BOLTs , This is gonna confuse the hell out of Toyota Dealer Techs.. They are gonna see all kinda wierd bolt sizes and styles ie torx / reverse torx etc etc... One positive will be maybe even more aftermarket parts for the motor etc which will also work on actual BMWs.

Why didnt they just use a chassis like the RCF and also Toyota / Lexus interior which they are totally capable of doing. Then if dont want to invest into a modern I6
to keep it true to its roots just use BMW's Engine / Trasmission but leave the rest of the car 100% Toyota, That would of been a much better choice vs just using an actual BMW with a body kit.
