In any case, it’s around $10 (including the shipping) each time the oil needs to be topped off. I don’t mind $10 every 1800 miles (as crazy as it sort of is nowadays). BTW, the 458s I owned previously and the sport+ Porsches I own/owned did not require a quart of oil every 1800 miles... |

As long as you're not bothered about the occasional $10 I'd say fill up and enjoy |

FWIW, the car should be able to handle being driven in sport plus 24/7 IMO.....I drive almost exclusively in Sport Plus with no ill-effects. Also, any reasonable assumption regarding the cause of oil burning would suggest that the settings should make little difference. Mine still show full as it is scheduled for it's first service.

Have enough mileage now 2200 to see if there is an oil useage issue. The computer thingie shows FULL when I ran the test this morning. Hate not having a simple dip stick. Usage has been. Break-in to 1200 miles followed BMW's recommendation. 1200 to 2200 mostly quick suburban driving (Sport+ stick left, Stability off) with about a dozen hard runs to get some Draggy times. One long trip 220+ miles each way of fast non-stop interstate runs. Interstate numbers

2020 X4 M40i oil consumption
Have about 5500 miles and the low oil light came on. Needed a quart.
Not very happy about this. Adding a quart every 5-6k miles is not my idea of a performance daily driver. |

I have close to 6000kms on my M40i and the oil still showed full just before I garaged it for the winter. I strictly adhered to the break in recommendations of not going over 4500rpm for the first 2000kms. I also did a combination of city and highway driving during break in, not running at the same speed for extended lengths of time.
Both my Z4 M40i and X3 M40i came with an extra quart of oil in a velcro attached storage pouch. Rob |

I hit the 5,000 mark on Friday around 2pm and an alert popped up on the screen, saying that I needed to add 1 quart of oil immediately. Well, I was about 3 miles from the BMW dealership I bought the car from and pulled it in.
The dealership added 1 quart of LL-17 FE+ 0W20 like it was no big deal and I was on my way within 5 minutes. Apparently the Z4 M40i burns oil and its a known issue. While the 1 quart was under warranty, I bought another quart myself for $11.28 to keep at the house. |

7350 miles got the add oil message. Took a quart to fill.
Driving pattern. 1200 mile break-in observed. General rural city type average speed 36mph Sport with shifter left. About 8 440 mile round trips on the interstate. Average speed 79mph Comfort with shifter right.

Interesting thread. I'll be getting into the B58 engine shortly, but I never experienced this in the N55 I currently drive in the hot Texas summers which mostly sees comfort mode.
It may be that the Sport/Sport+ increases the oil flow or that the sensors are analyzing the viscosity of the oil in determining remaining oil life. Food for thought. |

The Supra owners are all up in arms about this. My Supra B58 is at 4200 miles, still shows full on the digital gauge. Our M340i is at 20k miles and hasn't had any oil messages. Our prior N54s burned about a quart every 2-3k miles. FYI.

Just wanted to add to this.
The newer 2021 B58 engine with the higher output has oil consumption issues. This won't effect EU cars as they still have the older B58. All platforms using the new 2021 engine (340i, Supra etc) are consuming oil regardless of how they were driven from new. There are some exceptions of people who don't seem to have the issue and BMW are currently trying to figure out if there is a bad batch of engines or if this is a 'characteristic' of the newer engine. If you are having problems my advice is keep a record of how often your needing to top up - if BMW conclude it's a bad batch of engines then you want evidence to support your claim. |

2020 382hp version - computer still showed full right before the last oil change but I had less than 5,000 kms on it. I would think the display would show something even if it's only a half or quarter liter down so I'm guessing I'm good.
The car gets driven normally most of the time with the odd "spirited" session thrown in - I took break-in with a grain of salt though I avoided high rpms for the first 500 kms or so. Driven in Sport most of the time. Dave |

I just want to put my 2 cents in here;
1, On factory oil, I did frequent high rev runs, even in semi manual gear, frequently pushed and shifted in redlines. Back then oil did evaporate pretty quick. 2, I changed to high performance oil for track days in around 3500km, since then I had no problem at all. I used Wakos Triple R 10w-40. 3, Around 10000km I switched to Pakelo Kryption Racing 10w-60, also never had trouble in that regard. Note that I have B58 asian version with 340hp but retuned to 440whp. I also drive car in sport mode often. I do think if you drive in high rev all the time you need a better and thicker oil.
