Race cancelled, updates on drivers are unknown at this time. Prayers/well thoughts for all involved, horrible.
UPDATE: Anthoine Hubert has died in the accident. Absolutely terrible, what a sickening reminder of just how dangerous motorsport still is even with all the technological and safety advancements. What should have been a happy weekend with a return to the sport, is now devastated. RIP and all thoughts to his family and loved ones left behind. What a tragedy. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-a9086821.html Angle going up the hill, moment starts around 2:10 |

Here's a dead on angle of what happened. It looks like Anthoine was t-boned after hitting the barriers. What awful luck, terrible timing.

Two observations, in the first video you can actually see two feet with whit shoes sticking out of the tub, crazy.
2nd- in the shot of the accident, their looks to be a slow black car before the accident occurs. Don't know if the black car was the cause, involved, or just slowed down because of the accident. RIP- Always a sad day when something like this happens in motorsports. |

Don't know if you understand German but here's what happened: Das Unglück passierte in der zweiten Runde. Giuliano Alesi (Startnummer 20) schlich mit einem Reifenschaden in langsamen Tempo durch Eau Rouge und Raidillon. [edit: he actually lost the car coming out of Eau Rouge] Hubert wollte seinem Landsmann ausweichen und verlor daraufhin die Kontrolle über seinen Rennwagen.

Flat out Eau Rouge with blind spot too dangerous, ought to be changed to slow them down at this point with perhaps a chicane before it.Just my opinion.

So incredibly tragic; I was mowing lawns on Saturday and checked my phone and it was posted on the front page of CNN....it breaks my heart to see this occur....you immediately begin running through the checklist in your head of how far motorsport safety has come (I'm 67 and remember the ugly period in F1 during Sir Jackie Stewart's reign)....and you check off the unbelievable integrity of the survival cell they sit in, and how much design and controlled impact testing occurs to the CF monocoque, the fuel cell, the crumble and energy absorption zones on the car, the halo, the foam collar around the cockpit, the lowering of the driver deep into the car with uber-minimal amounts of driver exposed, etc....etc....etc....) and then you see this....a car has slowed significantly off the racing line....another car is out of control and off the racing line (I'm estimating the car that hit Anthoine was traveling appx 125-150 mph faster)....no level(s) of FIA mandated safety can overcome the math of this type of impact)....after telling my wife of this loss, I wept....it seemed sureal to return to lawn mowing, knowing the unbelievable loss that the Hubert family was walking into.
This horrific impact of a car nearly stopped and another car traveling at near race speed reminded me of the Alex Zanardi incident in Indy Car, when he came out of the pits and spun on cold tires at a high speed oval in Germany....he was stopped, sideways to the track in the racing line, when another car hit Alex at about the steering wheel area in the side....it sheared the car entirely off, with Alex's legs still in the sheared off footwell front of the car....again, no safety precaution can prevent this type of shunt. I grieve for the family and the racing community, and for us, fellow motorsport fans that love this sport and call it our own.

After watching all the videos, I still couldn't figure out exactly what had happened. This was posted today, and finally puts all the pieces together (he was attempting to avoid the car which spun in front of him). Anthoine took a much harder first impact than I thought, and of course the follow up was just devastating. RIP young man, such a tremendous loss.

The cause was Eau Rouge . Coming out of La Source , a long straight downhill at 300/320 + km/h , with the sight of Eau Rouge in front of you is insane ! Eau Rouge is actually a long downhill turn to a right uphill at full throttle and still at 300 + km/h and losing control there is ......what we saw . Eau Rouge is actually the most dangerous situation of all the circuits in the world .At that speed it's actually looking for danger . But yeah it's a race . And racing is all about speed . But it's when things and situations go wrong in a place like Eau Rouge . Was there more than once .Honestly , Eau Rouge scared the shi* out of me . RIP Anthoine

That section of the track really is dangerous as speed. It would suck to modify it but it's necessary. If anything an extra chicane would force the drivers to slow down and reduce the risk greatly.

changing Eau Rouge ll hurt Spa itself.. but adding more run off area d be better solution.. especially on the exit part's left and right side..

Jackie Stewart said the asphalt runoffs entice drivers to blast through keeping on the power rather than backing off... also Hulkenburg had this to say..
"There are tarmac run-off areas that do invite us to keep pushing as they don't have immediate consequence. I think it needs to be policed and you need to find the right balance somewhere. "Maybe it also the case where we need a customised solution for corners like Eau Rouge which is quite unique in that you don't really see that corner until you come up over the hill and see what is going on. "Sometimes things get a bit hectic and out of control on lap one or early in the race when everyone is bunched up. "Sometimes you see that happening more in the junior series, where they are still very motivated and maybe a bit too excited. Maybe there is a solution that for every corner is a little bit different." Is anyone asking why Juan Manuel Correa blasted through the run off? From my point of view Correa only saw Alesi limping center track, saw the smoke on the right, deduced Alesi was fading left and decided rather than cautiously passing he would blast through the inside on the run off to minimize the angle and speed reduction he needed to pass Alesi and obviously never saw Hubert until it was too late. Unless i'm completely misinterpreting Stewart and Nico and they aren't talking about Correa. I tried getting a better view of this but this is what i put together. I'm could obviously be completely wrong but is anyone else thinking this is a possibility? Edit; i just read he had a blow out from the debris.. oops.
