Curious if the heavier 6 engine in the 40i changes the handling, the steering, vs the 4 in the 30i considering it's a rear wheel drive? Sales rep told me BMW tries to keep the front/rear weight pretty even at 50/50.

The 30i is got 441 pounds less on the front end because of the engine.
Remember this is a rear wheel drive car and less weight on the back makes a difference.

The smaller engine means the Z4 sDrive30i is 156 pounds lighter than its M40i sibling, and all that weight comes right off the nose. Pop the hood and you'll notice the I4 engine is nestled as far back toward the firewall as possible, helping to achieve a perfect 50:50 weight balance.

Actually, 264 pounds difference not 441, same distance from the firewall since both engines are almost identical in length ( about 1 inch different). Looks like the 30i is got less weight on the front wheels. Maybe 40/60. That is even better.

Total Price (MSRP) - $56,295[/I][/QUOTE]
I was originally going for a 30i but when I went to the dealer in July, on the lot was a loaded CPO 2020 M40i for $55,000 in the exact color combo I was looking for (original sticker was $72,295). It also came with 7,800 miles on it. The 30i may have enough power but there's no such thing as too much power IMHO. |

Great deal! Even new, upcharge after discount and lease savings or increased residual was too small for me to make sense out of smaller engine.

We got the 30i. And the day before we took delivery I said to my partner, "should we get the M40i?" Of course he said no; and the dealer didn't try to talk me into the M40i (they only had a 30i in stock....). I regret getting the 30i (sorry guys!) It handles very differently in my opinion from the M40i with the weight reduction and less power. Luckily it's a lease and it's at such a price I could probably lease trade it out fairly quickly to someone. It's got the M Sport line, etc etc... gorgeous car- lots of compliments- and it's plenty fast sure... But the 4 doesn't sound good, feels artificial, and the ride and handling feels like a car $20k less.... Buyers remorse I guess. :/ |

To each their own. I added M sport and Dynamic Handling Package so I'm sure it will drive fine. Also, so many good reviews saying the 30i is plenty good enough. Enjoy your car. |

I have the 30i and am very content with the car. I use it as my daily driver for a 50-mile round trip. The better gas mileage is a plus. I also have the track package (it was an option in 2019 that they renamed for 2020) with the M Diff, brakes, and wider tires. IMHO, it really helps with the handling of the car and is a must on a car at this price point.
Sure, the extra power of the M40i would be nice, but I would only need it maybe 5% of the time I'm commuting. I have a F80 M3 that I feel like I'm neglecting when I drive it to/from work because I rarely have a chance to use the extra power. Trying to daily drive that car taught me that I didn't need a lot of power, but a well-balanced and fun car is important. Thus, I could not justify spending the extra $8-10K (based on the way I spec my cars) and special order the car (I bought off the lot with a healthy discount and got it spec'd the way I wanted it). Now, my love for the 30i would go right out the window if they come out with a proper Z4M. |

I missed out on the following which I would have liked (if I was ordering), in an otherwise fully-loaded 30i: Moonlight Black Soft Top Dynamic Handling Package Remote Start Heated Steering Wheel This was actually the only BMW I have owned that I haven't done a Priority 1 order on. Looks like the painted calipers come on the dynamic handling package. |
