22-07 Update Issues

I haven't been able to get my M40i to update to the new iDrive version so I asked the dealership to force an update while I had it in for another service. After arguing with them about it being done under warranty or not (this SIB should've covered it https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...04533-9999.pdf) They eventually came back and said the 21-11 update was the latest available and that no updates were recommended for my model. Do I just have some combination of options that doesn't play nice with the new version or is the dealership incompetent/really really doesn't want to update me under warranty?

This does not apply to all dealers, but there is a charge for updating i-levels, even if they are under warranty.
I recently updated i-level myself. The update does not exclude any particular vehicle. I think your dealer does not want the ISTA system occupied for a few hours.

Got an automatic 22-07 update without asking or searching. One morning it was just there. It replaced 21-11.

Your dealer is not trustworthy.

Some dealers seem reluctant to do the upgrades. I could only speculate why. However, I would think if the update shows up in your My BMW app but won't successfully complete the update that it's a warranty issue.

I don’t really get how these updates are supposed to work. When I got my M340i in March of 2021, it was running 20-11. In the almost two years I owned it, it never got an update. Would always say there were none available, but I know new versions had come out.

Thats the big mystery. Got the 22-07 without asking & have yet to get 22-07 for the M4 even searching for it. A lot of the guys on the M4 board got the update before my Z4 was updated.

I’m not holding out any hope with this update. Downloaded it and transferred to car but the car seems to be stuck in the “preparing update” phase. Then I got a message to say it hadn’t installed and would be erased. Then a few days ago I got the update again and of course it’s stuck in same place.
Mine is 3 years old now and I decided to download the free map update while I could, but that is stuck downloading to a memory stick at 67%.
It’s great having new tech downloads etc but they must be reliable. Not sure they are quite there yet, imagine bricking your drive system.

That's frustrating... I would think the dealer would be responsible for making sure that both the hardware and software were up to date at no charge at least while under warrantee. Not that this helps much, but mine started and over a period of several days completed without issues. I wasn't driving much over those days so maybe having the car idle helped.

Mine says it is downloaded and will let me know when completed. There are some rules in the manual, such as top has to be up on car to do update.

I guess that I am lucky but I have never had any issues on these downloads. Don't ask me what I am doing to make them happen.

Exactly the same has happened to me. My G29 is out of warranty so I'm going to ring my local BMW garage to see what the situation is. All other updates have worked fine.

Munich says,

"Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
- Programming via the remote software upgrade lasts approx. 20 minutes.
- Programming via Remote Software Upgrade is also possible without connectivity (e.g. in underground garages).
- During programming via Remote Software Upgrade, the electromechanical parking brake cannot be released.
- After a remote software upgrade, initialization of the control units is not necessary.
- If the programming is aborted during a remote software upgrade, it is no longer possible to start the engine! Then the vehicle must go to the service!
- After the programming via Remote Software Upgrade is complete, online provisioning and activation of the anti-theft alarm system start automatically.
- The vehicle must not be programmed via ISTA while programming by an active Remote Software Upgrade. The connection of a diagnostic system to the diagnostic socket ends actively programming Remote Software Upgrade with a programming abort.
When downloading the software for the Remote Software Upgrade, the vehicle can also be programmed via workshop system. In this case, the Remote Software Upgrade downloaded up to that point is discarded."

The BMW Remote Software Upgrade could be blocked for the following reasons:
The BMW Remote Software Upgrade prerequisite test in the vehicle fails (no customer note in vehicle):
- Battery charge below 75%
- Angle of inclination of vehicle parking space >12°
- Activated hazard warning lights
In these cases, the BMW Remote Software Upgrade should be available as soon as the cause (hazard warning lights / angle of inclination) has been remedied and the vehicle has been started after going to sleep once.
Battery in F40 / F44 series:
Technological properties of the EF battery (Enhanced Flooded Battery) can reduce the availability of the BMW Remote Software Upgrade."

-ID transmitter is in the vehicle
-Gear selector switch is in position P
-Parking brake is activated
-No connector in the diagnostic socket
-No data carrier in the drives (front and rear)
-Exterior lights are switched off.

“Parking brake must be activated”
Thanks for pointing that out. That might be my problem. I hardly ever have the parking brake activated.

It looks like you all actually get to see that there is an update available. My issue is that it doesn't even seem to think I have an update I can even attempt to install. Good luck to everyone trying to get it to actually install once downloaded.

Haven’t been driving the Z much this winter (some cold; mostly rain) but I noticed the 22-07 software update was available when I took it out this past weekend per a notification on the infotainment display.

As it was warm and dry yesterday, I took it out again for an errand and upon parking it in the garage saw the update notification again. So I initiated the update and left the garage. A few minutes ago I thought to check on it and took the attached pics showing the update history per the phone app and some pics of the listed updated features if anyone cares.

First visit to dealer the SA sorta ignored it, and suggested that I double-check my Connected Drive status, though I was pretty sure it was active. Second visit to dealer resulted in "yeah, we had to connect the ITSA and manually do it" (what I told them in the appt notes, but a less detailed response), but they couldn't tell me what pre-requisite caused the issue--and charged me $189 for the pleasure of fixing something that should have been covered under the active Connected Drive / OTA / RSU features, IMO. Will grill the SA a bit harder next visit, though he was pretty dismissive in saying that the tech didn't get a specific error message . . .which, now that I think about it, may be plausible, given other gremlins . . .lol.

Forntunately for me, a friend of mine runs the BMW service shop, Unfortunately he is retiring in May...
