Interesting review. I like the look of Z4 but really wish they kept the hardtop.

While I understand why people want the hard top version still, the soft top isn't bad at all. I've been thoroughly enjoying my '20 z4 m40i for about 3 weeks now, just under 1k miles, and about 3 sun burns in.

The soft top is quiet enough to have a normal volume conversation when driving at 80mph and feels relatively solid (read tight) when closed compared to other rag tops I've seen. Plus having it as a soft top allows for a very spacious trunk space for a 2 seater convertible. Easily fit a 15 pack of bounty paper towels from Sams in the trunk without having to remove them from the packaging. Yes, that means it fit through the trunk opening unlike the Camaro's trunk opening. It will fit 2 overhead compartment bags for an airplane with a duffle bag or 2 at the same time.

+1. Soft tops don't stand a chance in the harsh weather of the Middle East. Even late model Bentleys look like they're covered in rags out of a refugee camp after a few years under the sun. I've had an e89 and would love to get the new Z4 if some aftermarket company comes up with a hardtop solution. IMO soft tops are designed with western markets in mind and have no place in emerging markets.

You see at least 20 4 series convertibles for every C/E-class or A5 convertible and at least 10 californias for every bentley GTC or aston volante here in Dubai.

Since BMWs are made in Europe... they are engineered for most of the world. If you live on the artic pole or in the middle of the Sahara desert or the desert in Dubai... then make your selections accordingly.

I live in Texas.. which has likely the second harshest weather of the 50 states (Arizona worst? ) .. We get some cold temps which can get below zero a few times a year and the temps can be as hot as 40-45 C (104-113 F ). in those temp ranges.. the BMW soft top works very well and can certainly last for a decade or more with no issues if reasonably cared for.

My daughter's 2004 325 has been an outdoor car the past 4 years and the top is in great condition. Her prior 2001 similarly had no issues up to 225K miles when I sold it.

The folding metal roof is nice.. but BMWs are already weight challenged, and the competition also has a soft top. The complexity of the folding roof makes it a painful experience sometimes for those in hail prone areas as most convertible trim shops will decline to work on it and recommend the car got to a dealer where the labor rates will be astronomical.

Lack of hard top? Not a problem.

Lack of manual transmission? Big problem.

I guess BMW is only wanting to sell these to retirees in Florida. They probably figure the younger driving enthusiasts who want a 6-speed will gravitate towards a 2-series/M2 anyhow.

It is interesting that BMW essentially makes buyers decide ..

Profiling and styling in the Vert , or if you are a driving enthusiast then you can have a manual in the hardtop coupe. But you can't have a convertible M2.. ( only m240) and you can't have a manual open top Z4..

Apparently there is no ///M countryside ?? therefore the terms convertible and manual are mutually exclusive in ///M town.

Are you surprised it’s low or high? The M340 is in that range, as are the competition. The Z4 35is I had in 2011 was $76k, so I’d gladly take $65k for a better version of the car eight years later.

How'd that work out for you? The resale market is better measure of true demand. Residual speaks for itself.

Prediction: at this pace, this will be the last Z4 we see.

I found it interesting that the 992 Porsche cabrio has some steel plates underneath the rag top to make it keep its shape it the long run.

In this review Mat says the new z4 has something similar as well. If this is true, this makes the car a lot more appealing, but i still prefer the look of the previous hard top over the new one.

The z4 does have a steel plate across the top. Helps keep a nice uniform shape when the top is down that matches the trunk panel and quarter panels. You can knock on it and feel it.

He is a clown - and an idiot. He knows nothing about cars, only cares about storage space for his chocolate bars and water bottles.
