With high C02 taxes in the Netherlands, the m40 costs $86000.
The 718 becomes more and more interesting.

718 hell. $49000 in the USA gets you a $440 hp Corvette with dealer discount.

The high price will be this car's Achilles' Heel.

A "high price = heel" theory would only be true if the Z4 were proven to be an unworthy Boxster competitor. Otherwise, the Z4 may well be the far better bang for the buck.

Perhaps. But even if the Z4 is a worthy competitor, and may be as good as, or even slightly better than the Boxster, the Porsche has a known and long-standing performance reputation that will attract new and repeat buyers. Let's call that "reputation inertia". For the performance enthusiast, the Z4's reputation inertia, at least in its recent E89 incarnation, has been "meh". Nonetheless, I think that BMW could seriously build its early sales of the Z4 and counter that Boxster reputation inertia if BMW Sales and Marketing went as hard after the Boxster on price as the BMW engineers have clearly done on performance. The math is simple really:

Better car + very competitive price = great sales numbers.

Just witness the comment in Post #23 above.

By many accounts, the 982 Boxster/Cayman is not selling well and will likely to be phased out in 2020 when the current generation was due for replacement. There has been no indication for Porsche that there will be another generation of the Boxster/Cayman, and if there was, we should have seen prototype mules running around for the last year or so.

If this is true, along with the potential cancellation of the Mercedes SLC, the Z4 will not be left with much in the way of direct competition.

In that case, it will be very interesting to see how the G29 Z4 fares in that market.
