I'm still mystified at how pervasive car theft is in the UK... though I suppose it's harder to disassemble/truck US cars to Eastern Europe.

Compared to Porsche where you need to spend 50% of the car's price on options just to get it where it should be?
Tell me about it. I get my 991.2 GTS Cabriolet that starts at $133,000 up to $199,270 because I load it with the stuff it's supposed to have from jump.

At least in the Porsche configurator.

Wow 40i models have such a large upcharge.

Adding Msport and track package onto a 30i is $5,400.

That means the 40i (which includes m sport and track package) is still $8,400 more with the same options added (paint, 19" wheels, prem, exec, etc)...

A fully loaded 40i crosses 70K. Taking into account the competition, the cayman boxter are still more expensive, but they don't sell well. The TT and SLC are probably on their way out as well.

I want the Z4 to do well, so hopefully there are enough people who want to buy one!

So the new US ordering guide shows that the 40i is available in Glacier Silver, which was not allowable under any of this configurators. Hope this is not a typo!!!

$70,250 would be my build, way too high for not being a true M Roadster

switching to the soft top this thing should have been in the mid $60K range the way I built it with this engine.

AWD M340i pretty loaded is around $65K, seems like years ago the soft top Z3/Z4 were about the same price as a loaded 3 series top line (non M). Maybe because of limited sales expectations they had to inflate the prices?

Yes, but it goes away as an option when you add the M sport body.

I do as well.. but wow.. the fact that a Z4 m40 I spins up so quickly beyond M2 competition $$ is a big concern..

Agree.. the M performance badging certainly doesn't justify a 70K price in my mind....

and of course, the irony here is that for BMW to make the Z4 " affordable.." they shared with Toyota...

With this pricing, the sDrive 30i will likely outsell the M40i by at least 2:1. Even so, if I were buying now, it'd be the M40i for sure, no questions asked. My M235i only has 33K miles, so I'm a few years away from deciding on M40i, M440i Convertible, M4 Convertible or Boxster S.

wonder if they should have just gone full blown M Roadster again and skipped the M40i

just offer a 30i or full M version...

I think the M40i will plenty potent once it arrives. A full blown Z4 M with the new S58 would be $85K +or-, and I not sure that's much better. Considering the M40i comes pretty loaded with MP LSD, I think it will be the sweet spot - more powerful than a Boxster S, and still while pretty pricey, it will be much cheaper than the P car similarly equipped.

Let It Ride

No disrespect to anyone on this blog but sometimes the comments you read from fence sitters is amazing.

Say what you will about the price of this or the price of that but if you are a true Z4 fan you're going to fork up the $$$ and buy the car. It doesn't matter how much the Boxster is, how much the 3 series (fully loaded) is or how much the M2 is. Nobody cares. If you like the Z4 you're going to buy the M40i version and pony up the nearly $70,000.00 to own it. Yes that's a lot of money and yes there are other cars out there for the same amount of bucks. But that's not the point. It's only money and you can't take it with you. In this day and age you are what you drive. So for many they just need to pull up their skirts and put on their big girl panties and just bite the bullet.

It's that simple. This Z4 is not for everyone and not everyone can or wants to afford it. But you can bet you a$$ that everyone will want to drive it. Drive it like they stole it. The fact that this Z4 may not be for everyone is probably a good thing.

As a true BMW car guy I don't care how much it cost. I had an E85 Z4 and an E89 Z4. This 2020 M40i G29 will be my third Z4. I know it is going to be a jewel of a car and driving it everyday with the top down here is Southern California is what it is all about. I am going to love every freakin minute of it. When you see me flying down the highway with the top down please make note of my ear to ear smile. Cuz bloggers this is what the Z4 roadster is all about.

My 2012 35i MSRP was about $69k. The M40i in my dream config is about $72k. That's not bad at all given inflation, additional equipment, more tech, more power, etc. with or without M badging.

To be clear, that's a heck of a lot of money. But compared to the predecessor, almost reasonable pricing. Would I rather pay, say, MX5 Miata money for a Z4? Absolutely. But like someone else said, if I cannot or want to afford a Z4, BMW isn't exactly forcing me to buy one.

How stupid that Exec Pkg is bundled w/Vernasca. So, because I want SensaTec, I become excluded from ordering several desirable (bundled) features that have **nothing** to do with seat material, like upgraded lights and sound system.

Guess I'll have to make due with my 2 Series a while longer, hehe.

The world is changing fast and not everyone cares about their car like they did yesterday.

This car is very expensive for what you get... BMW better bring some great leases.

The M240i is the cheapest 40i model you can get right now.
The premium package is more of a tech package and is all you need to get the adaptive headlights. You can keep the sensatec seats and get it with a manual...and a trunk and a back seat.

I payed round about 85000 $ here for my M40i .
Also we have (not for long anymore ) also the M140i or M140iX
Mine an Ix was 81700$ in 2017 for a full spec edition with legal 400HP
My M240ix cabrio was 73000$ in 2016.

So US look pretty cheap to me.
