Weight savings, cost savings, trunk space, and appearance. I personally think a rag top looks much better and made the E89 look really ugly with the top up. It looks like BMW really concentrated on performance for this gen. I really loved the E85 but the E89 was disappointing.

Of course they decided to axe the manual transmission as they start to make the car good again, though.

I thought this exact same thing. I like these though.

This is one if the far better ones. Seems like the X Series is growing to a humongous size while normal cars just grows them to enormous

Do you know if the hard top will be offer in the future? I don't like soft tops either
This is very common these days, all convertibles changes from hardtop to soft top - not ever..!! Each model have one solution, the soft top on a Z have numerous advantages over a hardtop

here is an interesting take on the design. Personally, I like both the E85 and the E89 having owned/own 1 of each.

dont like

I have owned and driven, Z3, Z4 2007 and 2012 Z4 I got to say the proportions look ugly from the side, rear, front OK, headlight design sucks. Compare this to the 718, come on.

I don't think it will be in the same price bracket as a Boxster. Especially if you want to spec your Boxster with a radio and leather seats, usually jumps up to 80k very quickly.

I'd agree other than the lack of the sweet Porsche 6 soundtrack.

I think most people don't know how to properly spec a 718, and add unnecessary options. Also, while the new will have more HP and Torque, one must remember the 718 is a MID ENGINE car which makes all the difference. The base model does 0-60 in 5.5, how fast do you need to go really?

2018 718 Boxster (base):

Metallic Color
Full Leather Interior
LED Headlights and Taillights
Full/Auto climate control (separate)
Base Audio system (good enough)
Auto dimming mirrors
Heated seats
Cooled seats
Lane Change Assist
Navigation
Total $75,000

Skip NAV and use your phone, total = $72,000

5.5 sec 0-60 is dog slow.

Besides I'd never own a base model Boxster.

The flat 6 is glorious... so regardless it's sad they are gone.

In my opinion E89 was (and is) one of the most elegant and beautiful BMW's. A future classic, mark my words.

That is a lot of money for a 4 cylinder relatively slow car. I recently saw a zero option Cayman with a manual at my local dealership. It was around 65k and felt great to not have unnecessary items but when I saw the engine specs, I was turned off.

Patent photos make every car look ugly.

My only concern is the shape being more curvaceous than the more angular concept.

Based on spy photos and recent reviews I think it'll look just fine.

It will never be a classic to me because it spearheaded BMW's era of numb driving dynamics. That car was, from the very beginning, designed to be a mushy cruiser. Blasphemy.

It amazes me how well the Boxster/Cayman and 911 have aged. These cars are due for replacement within the next couple years but you'd never guess it by looking at them. Still some of the most beautiful and modern looking cars on the road today.

As others have echo'ed the 4 banger puts a damper on it. Yes from a numbers perspective the 4 can replace the 6, but something inside me cringes at the thought of dropping $70K+ on a 4-banger.

"Dog-slow" for what? Driving on regular roads with 45 mph speed limits or on highways with 70 mph speed limits. The Boxster is one of the most fun cars to drive, and on twisty roads, it will run circles around many cars that post sub 5 second 0-60 times.

Miata got more interesting today. I think I'd take a 181 hp car that's 1,100 pounds lighter than the Z4. I chose a Miata over the Z3 the first go around and only the M Coupe made me change. Hopefully BMW has a real M planned and bonus points for putting an ugly roof with no Hofmeister kink on it.
