VW Golf R Fully Unveiled: 315HP, Drift Mode and a Manual

People are probably a bit disappointed that Volkswagen decided to discontinue the standard Golf in the US, and understandably so. The small hatchback has been a staple for the brand since it arrived Stateside in 1983. But there is a silver lining: Americans will still get the GTI and Golf R, and both of those models promise to be better than ever. Proof of that comes in the form of the newly debuted 2022 Volkswagen Golf R.

This is the most powerful VW Golf R ever built. Packing a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the new Golf R produces 315 horsepower (235 kilowatts) and 310 pound-feet (420 newton-meters), which gives it a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds and a top track speed of 155 mph (250 kmh). Those power figures represent a 27-horse and 15-lb-ft increase compared to the previous model, and buyers can choose from either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed DSG.

As you'd expect, the 2022 Golf R comes standard with 4Motion all-wheel drive – but this setup is a bit different than in previous generations. VW touts a new rear differential that distributes power variably between the axles, with the ability to send up to 100 percent of torque to the outside wheel using a dedicated “Drift Mode” feature. The new Drift Mode is one of two special drive modes configurable within Race mode and joins standard drive options like Sport, Comfort, and Individual.

VW also totally retuned the Golf R’s strut-type front and multi-link rear suspension and gave it a 0.8-inch (20-millimeter) lower ride height than the previous version. The stiffer springs and new geometry makes the new performance Golf 10 percent stiffer than its predecessor both front and rear, with a one-percent decrease in negative camber and a weight loss of 6.6 pounds thanks to the lightweight aluminum subframe.

Visually, the latest Golf R certainly looks as good as its performance suggests. The hot hatch gets a new front bumper with a motorsport-inspired splitter, R-specific air intake grilles, and gloss black elements throughout. A set of 19-inch alloy wheels come standard and wrapped in summer performance tires.

The cabin gets a tech-forward design – similar to what we've already seen on the GTI – highlighted by a 10.0-inch touchscreen, VW's Digital Cockpit with a virtual instrument cluster, and even touchpad controllers on the steering wheel, replacing traditional analog buttons. There's even a special "R" button on the steering wheel for easy access to the Race drive mode. Blue trim pieces and "R" logos adorn the seats, dash, and steering wheel, while the Golf R gets optional Nappa leather seating surfaces for the first time.

The 2022 VW Golf R will go on sale in the US beginning late next year. No word on pricing, but considering the 2019 model started at $40,395, expect the new version to cost just as much if not slightly more.

@jstein55 I just don't know how to feel about this new generation. Visually it's not to bad, but I guess one just has to get use to it. Not to keen on the wheels, but I do like the round quad tips instead of the oval ones in the previous Gen. Glad they decided to keep the manual transmission.

I've grown to the front end, its not my favorite, but its also no G8X mess, so that isn't too bad, but I really don't like the touch capacitive buttons. I think the Mk7 was the perfect balance. The adult hot hatch, but also had a very nice interior with a good mix of new tech and older physical controls. And the styling while tame will age well. Glad to see they kept the manual though. As interesting as all of these FWD based cars with drift mode are, I do wonder how much the drift mode is actually used.

There is - it’s now called the Golf SportWagen. And the jacked up AWD version is called the Golf Alltrak. Still wouldn’t touch another VW product again though.

Kinda looking cross-trekky. So far I am not liking it. Maybe my opinion will change over time.

Agree that the wheels are not good, some five spoke Audi RS type would be better and the front brake calipers should be at the back of the discs.

I see they adopted the mini joystick center console shifter. What's the anticipated curb weight?

It kind of looks like the Porsche electric shaver shifter.....I'd be going manual though.

Does anyone actually manually shift gears with the center console shifter in a car that has it? I'm guessing very few which is why manufacturers have started minimizing them. #BraunShaverSeries

I don't disagree with that, and the Braun shaver in the Porsche is the subject of much ridicule. I've frankly never shifted a car with an automatic trans because, well it's automatic. My MB has paddle shifters but on a crossover that just seems a bit ridiculous to me. I'll likely never have anything of a sports car nature that has paddle shifters, but who knows. I like driving a stick, it gives me pleasure. I suspect that I could get the VW manual around the track just as quick as I could get it around the track with paddles shifting and it would be less enjoyable for me.

At least in the US, I am the exact opposite. I was a huge VW fan owning only VWs until I was 30. And I still have my corrado, which I've owned for more than 20 yrs. They've gone from quirky and sometimes interesting cars, to dull, bland, and with sometimes questionable styling.

I'm starting to very slowly warm to the mkVIII. I still have an issue with the design but have narrowed it down to the area from the middle of the hood down to the bottom of the headlights. That area looks out of proportion and bulbous, whereas the rest of the car is a bit tighter in design. But I have also read reports that the mkVIII has undergone substantial cost cutting, including (but not limited to) removing the hood strut for a prop rod.

But getting back to the rest of the lineup, other than the GTI/R, I wouldn't touch another VW with a 10 ft pole. They're so tragically dull. But what about the GLI? It might be dynamically similar to a GTI, but the design is unattractive. No thanks. I do like the Arteon, but not sure I like the price. I will say that if VW sold the current gen t-reg in the US, I would likely own one. I sat in one last year in Stockholm and loved it.

It's good to see that hot hatches are still popular in the US. With FWD coupes gone from our shores, these will enjoy their place in the market for those who want an affordable performance car that has more character than a sedan.

Those are gone from the US market and not coming back.

Golf sportwagon is not the Jetta wagon and the builds/specs are crap if you want performance.

Actually it is and always has been a golf-based wagon-

5th gen (and before) Golf and Jetta are on same platform, Golf has hatch Jetta has trunk. JSW (Jetta Sport Wagon) also golf based- is wagon.
6th gen (more like 5.5 gen for Golf) Jetta gets its own (cheaper/longer) platform. JSW continues on the Golf platform- its actually just a front fascia refresh of the 5th gen JSW
7th gen- Golf goes MQB, Jetta stays on as mk6 (until very recently), JSW renamed GSW (Golf Sport Wagon) and continues to use Golf platform.

So even though they only just renamed it, its really always been a "golf wagon" in spirit. I do agree with you though, other than mk4 and a couple years in mk5 where they gave the jsw the gti engine its performance has been lacking, I wish we got the Golf R Wagon in the states.

They showed the last generation Golf R SportWagen at a US auto show (IIRC it was New York) prior to its launch, and I believe they had tentatively planned to bring it over in small numbers. But then the diesel scandal hit and killed that as well as other low priority model launches.

Unfortunately, with VW axing all wagons in the US, there is no hope for the new Golf R SportWagen (currently in testing) to come here.

Not as good looking as the outgoing model.

Love the interior design, looks very upscale. I just really dislike these VAG razor shifters. Give me a real shifter.
