Protecting paint for the trip home from PCD
I’m taking delivery of my Z4 later this month at the Performance Center in South Carolina and am looking for the best options to protect the car on the road trip home to Georgia where I plan on having PPF installed. I’ve seen that people have used everything from blue painter’s tape to Road Warrior Plus paint on protection. I’m interested in everyone‘s experiences and feedback on the options, including the logistics of applying any of the above at the Performance Center.
Thanks! |

I’m going with the Road Warrior protection. I plan on spending a couple of days driving on and around the tail of the dragon before heading back to Nashville.

I live in Nashville, as well.... well I did until recently before I moved back down to Franklin. I talked to Extreme there in SC, who supposedly does all of the PCD's work. They recommended their Cross Country, which is a partial wrap that takes a day to install (Xpel). Pickings are slim here in Nashville for PPF, at least from what I found. Do you know anyone? Last time I had a wrap locally was a nightmare. I had even thought about just staying a week or so there so they could do a full wrap.

The return trip is about 2.5 hours, but all you need is one dump truck full of gravel to ruin your whole day, and there is a lot of construction on that route. I had a 2 month old Audi TT and had a 1'sq piece of sheet metal fly off the back of a truck in front of me and pinwheel into my front fender. There wasn't much I could do as it zig zagged across the lane. That puts me squarely in the better safe than sorry mode.

Being the type A person that I am, I called Road Warrior directly to find out how much time to allocate to apply the product. They said to allocate 30-45 min worst case and to apply 3 coats to make removal easier. For my Z4 they said 8oz would work for two coats but might not be enough for 3 coats, so they recommended the 16oz bottle. They also pointed out that if it was raining to not even bother applying it. It should dry faster if it is above 50 and sunny.
