LOL.
During this time, the cars racked up more than 6 million miles of automated driving, of which 65,000 miles were without any human backup driver.

6 million miles and only 47 accidents, mostly caused by other drivers

The tech will *eventually* get there, let's not kid ourselves. However, to do real life/world testing is just stupid, extremely reckless and dangerous, esp w the avg idiot behind the wheel.

I can't help but think this is just a crazily, overly-complicated solution for a 'prb' that no one is really asking to solve: ppl who don't like driving should just get chauffeurs or take the bus.

Its just 65,000 miles of automated driving and 47 accidents. The other 5,935,000 miles of driving had human backup drivers.

The people who asked to solve the problem are Google so they can have more people spend more time Googling, which is simply for generation of more revenue. That's why Waymo is a separated company from Google so the deep-pockets don't reach to Google or Alphabet.

I put the problem statement for Level 5 full autonomous driving like this:

I (hypothetical American person) have to drive my car to destinations which takes time, I want my car to drive itself so that I can use that time to sleep, work, phone calls, leisure, other. I will also be able to brag to my peers that do not have this technology. I dont like public transit because it is not direct to my destination and has people I dont want to be around. Plus its not My vehicle if its public. I dont like chauffeurs because they are expensive and I would rather be alone or just with my people.

I still question that when the technology "gets here" will it actually improve the driving environment. Usually for every introduction of new technology, new problems arise. If politicians and Waymo want to lower traffic deaths, we can solve that tomorrow, just lower the maximum speed limit to 25 MPH. Almost every modern car can prevent passenger deaths at speeds of 25 MPH.

That is a shit-load cheaper than implementing autonomous driving.

I dunno guys, I kinda look w disdain ppl that go for self-driving...why even bother? They obviously don't enjoy driving. They should just wait until someone invents teleportation and cut out the 'middle man' of this self-driving concept.

We could have both. Self-driving when you want and the ability to go into traditional driving mode. Have you seen the movie irobot? Will Smith went into manual override at one point. That said, it was strongly discouraged by the tone of the movie. Will people lose their skill (and possibly license) for driving if they don't do it enough? Will driving manually be completely illegal someday or limited just to racetracks?

Haha, yup, that's the price to pay for laziness and not wanting to drive one's own car. I'm pretty sure some will *still* wanna take on that risk lol.

I've always had an idea for that.

Show up at the airport, inject you with some propoful or something, throw you in the cargo hold, have you come out on the luggage carousel, just inject you with something to wake you up, done and done. Would be the best airline experience you'll ever have. All you'd remember is going in and out of the terminal building.

I've done this to myself on some long haul flights. Few cocktails in the lounge, pop a muscle relaxant, few more glasses of wine on board, and it's lights out.

Best result I obtained so far using this method was being passed out for 12h of a 17h flight.

I gotta ask, is there someplace really worth going on a 17 hour flight?

I travel a lot for my job, and this trip was New York to Mumbai in India. Then another 2h flight further south. I like to travel and experience new places. 17h in the sky is rough, but the food alone was worth it.

17 hours in business class is a piece of cake. Economy, with a baby and 4 year old, now that's where you're tested.

I hear Thailand is nice too, when you get there everything is super cheap, and it's a great time. But those flights and time changes are a doozy.

American's are always so sketchy about long haul, must be an aussie thing as everything is long haul for us. We don't blink at 8 hours.

I do find it better to chop up the flight though as I cannot sleep on planes. Last time we went home we went from Toronto to hawaii, 10 hour day time flight which is fine with kids that can watch movies etc. 3 days there to chill then another day time flight to Sydney of 10 hours. On the way back we had lay flats in business, 16 hours direct to houston then just 2.5 hrs to Toronto, this was fine too.

This is about a billion times better then 5 hours to the west coast then BOARDING A 16 HR FLIGHT AT WHAT IS 2AM TO YOUR BODY.

Could be something to do with what it does to your body. Blood clots, etc.

That's where I'm from and indeed one hell of a flight, especially if you're in economy. I do OK sleeping in planes and can get some rest from East Coast to Tokyo. But then to have another 7 hr flight after that? Brutal.

And you come out of the airport having no idea what day it is, and that is before you get hit by the humidity
