Manual focus, of course. Still, pretty decent detail for so many stacked TCs. If I had a sitting bird to shoot, it might have come out ok. These leaves were a good 400ft or so away. I only cropped a bit to get to 4:3, so this is pretty much the full shot. If the clear skies hold out, I may try a moon shot tonight.
Pretty sharp, considering all the glass!

Here's the moon with all that glass. I was really hurting without IS. This is tripod mounted and using a wired remote. Luckily the wind is calm tonight. Tough getting a decent focus though without IS. Any slight touch of the lens sent shockwaves through it for 20 or 30 seconds. I had to focus, wait for it to settle, trying to fine tune, wait for it to settle, etc, etc. Still not sure it's as sharply focused as it could be. Nonetheless, I'm happy with it. Very little crop here. Nice having the moon almost fill the frame. And boy does it move fast at this zoom level.

I want to see you guys with the 500 f4 rigs stack some TCs and take a tripod mounted moon shot. Use LV 10x focus and get it as sharp as you can. The 500 f4 with stacked 1.4x and 2x TCs should be 1400mm, right?

If I had any extension tubes I would gladly give it a go tonight, while I am watching my chili simmer...Alas, I don't. Maybe the next time (oh and there WILL be a next time!) I rent one I will have some. I was out again all day today at two wildlife refuges about 100 miles north of here and had a blast. I haven't looked at today's stuff yet, but here is one from yesterdays outing (about 100 miles south of here). I love the feathers of the Ibis.

^^^That's a cool looking bird. Love the feathers.

No extension tubes. Just stacked TCs. Although you might need and extension tube to stack Canon TCs. The Kenko's just fit together without tubes.

Yeah, no touching without IS.

You can't stack the Series III TCs and, sadly, that's all I have.

Great light and colors Ed. It's nice close shot.

Lovely shot, Mark. I need to try that effect sometime, always admire the ethereal quality; not sure if it's a style or has a name but I'm always drawn to such shots as the above.

--

Here's a landscape shot from yesterday, took my Diavel on a little trip to the Everglades.

Shot in Everglades National Park, at the end of the only road that goes south through the Everglades, down to the very southern tip of land in Florida not counting Key West. The view was worth the ride down.

The body of water in this photo is called Florida Bay, in between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

This is with 6D and 24-105 f/4L at 24mm on a tripod.

Great B&W landscape. I love the composition and great sky.

Here's what I did this morning. I was looking for big bucks, but found this cute yearling instead:

Thanks, David. Who knew the 400 f5.6 could be such a bokeh machine?

Nice shot of the 'Glades. Wouldn't want to be there in a hurricane, though. Doesn't look very far above sea level.

Thanks Mark,

Lol, yeah I think the highest elevation is about 4 feet!

Part of my ride down I stopped at some of the touristy places; did a walkabout in one of them where you could see huge trees that were downed in a hurricane, and all this plant life growing on the downed trees, with other trees taking their place.

It was quite interesting. The Everglades is like survival of the fittest in the plant world, they're all strangling each other to fight for sunlight.

We don't have mountains here so I make do with what Florida provides me when I can't travel

Cool photos everyone! I really look forward to seeing this thread everyday. I just got home from my 3rd day with the 500. Today we went out to Pt Reyes National Seashore again, with all the firepower I could muster. Right now I'm downloading cards and sipping some 12 year old Yamazaki single malt whiskey (basically a Japanese scotch) while I wait. Today my friend ditched the 400 5.6 with a TC on the 5D3 and tried out the 100-400 with the TC for some versatility. I am interested to see how the shots came out. I never took the 1.4 off the 500 this weekend, the reach was just too intoxicating to give up! Anyhow, here is one from Saturday. I like how his antlers line up with the tree. This was the 5D3 with at 700mm.

For shooting bucks the last week or so, I took the 2x TC-III off my 500mm for the first time in weeks. It is indeed addictive. The AF is amazing with the bare lens.

I highly recommend lensrentals.com. The whole process was very easy. I had it shipped to a nearby fedex store, so I didn't have to be home to sign for it. They give you the return label, so now it is all packed back up and waiting for me to drop it off at the same store tomorrow morning (sniff). Very reasonable price for such a great piece of equipment.

The downside of course, is that I really want one now!

I was so excited when i saw the mouse through the viewfinder (too far away to see with the naked eye), I just started machine gunning away without checking settings. I way underexposed this, but thankfully RAW saved me and I got a very usable image. These little guys are so skittish I can never get close enough with my usual glass.

The Canon 1.4x TC III I'm testing now came from borrowlenses.com. I've used both lensrental and borrowlenses. Both are excellent.

Great kestral pic.

Speaking of the 1.4X III, as I said, my buddy was using my 5D3 with the 100-400 with that TC on it today. It's a bit fussy with the autofocus, but it certainly worked!

At f/8 the AF on the 5D3 slows down a bunch, but it's worth the fight to get pix like that. I have the same battle with the 2x on my 500/f4, but I seldom take it off.
