Population Based Election Financing

It occurs to me after reading the commentary in Real Dodger 's thread about Super PACs that the actual solution to getting the money out of politics is to bring in a system which would be based on a candidate getting X amount of dollars to run based on the population of the area which the seat represents. Everything else in elections is based on population data why shouldn't this be?

State and local elections would be financed by the state and federal elections would be financed at the federal level. All candidates would receive an equal amount of money from the pool of money for a particular seat after qualifying for the election. No more outside money. Let the best ideas and ideals win.

What does everyone think?

Sounds almost like communism - not a bad idea - but why not just have each radio/TV station provide PSA-time to each candidate in equal measure.

Although, what will teen boys do if all the campaign sings are removed from public property???

That's actually a legitimate addition to the program.

I'm sort of okay with this as it shows how efficent a canadiate and his team are with limited resources, a skill most politican appear to lack now. Down side is you can't account on free coverage from the media.

Very true but the media accounting can be easily performed. It's done now anyway and there is no reason it can't easily be quantified.

On the other hand, how much money a candidate can raise is a measure of their support, so limiting them will boost the weak and weaken the strong fundraisers.

I would rather see a hard cap on contributions ($X per candidate per year, $Y for all candidates in a year). That is great for the candidate’s fundraising but unfortunately there is no way to stop the proxy groups who can apparently raise unlimited funds and spend where and how they see fit. That is protected “speech” so I don’t know how we end that, which is really where the problem lies I think.
