I almost bought an M3 competition instead of the Z4. The way I figured it, the difference in resale value in 4 years would offset the increase in purchase price; especially since I drive 2500 miles a year.

Also, don’t forget the other positive, with the Z4 you can put the top down and enjoy the open air experience of driving a really nice roadster!

The resale of them will really drop if/when a manual comes out. Automatic roadsters always tend to have faster depreciation. Locale is also important. Lots easier to find higher depreciation in high turnover top down locales like Miami or LA.

Could be a lot of reasons not to get the M but as a general statement against all M's that they will lose value faster than the Z4 might be stretchy. Some are pretty much Unicorns in their own right & some are derivatives of very popular car lines.
The 4 series piggy line has been very popular outselling the 3 series line 39,430 to 23,088 January through September 2023 just in the US. Worldwide the 4 series has sold about 100,000 cars through September. Using Kelly Blue Book my 2020 24,000mile Z4 bought in February 2020 got an price that was $26,000 off $73,000 MSRP about -36%. Using Kelly Blue Book my 2022 15,000 mile M4C Convertible bought in June 2021 got an price that was $7,000 off $93,000 MSRP about -6.5%

Something that will help maintain the G29 M40i values down the line is the lack of verts on the market.
F-Type, Audi TT going away. New Nissan Z is a hardtop. I think this lack of options will make a G29 an attractive option on the used market. Corvettes have gone way upmarket now and a Miata is 30-40k new. Once the hard depreciation let’s up in 3-5 years IMO owners of well kept Z4’s will be content the price dropping is over. |

One thing that I have noticed is that the e89 z4s are holding their value now or even going up in price. This seems to be the case for the automatics as well as the manuals, which properly and deservedly pull a greater premium. I had traded my 2010 z4 6M for my 2021 Miata. I suspect the e89 would be worth more today than when I traded it.
Overall, I think that bodes well for the long-term values of well-kept g29s long-term. I also agree that a manual version of the g29 will depress the value of the automatics down the road. I believe the manual version is out in Europe. I wonder what that has done for the used market over there? |

Don’t agree that a manual Z4 will make auto shifted Z4s less desirable in the future. Manual Z4s may be highly sought after and command a premium, but there’s no reason to assume that people will only want or even be able to drive manuals..
Automatic Corvettes probably outsell manual models by 2 or 3 to 1 if the resale market is any guide. And plenty of people have been buying Tiptronic Porsches even though there’s generally a manual option as well. Quote:

Was one of the cars I was following. What I was looking for a DOHC/DCT package did not show up when I was in the market. That left the Z4 & M4. At the time only pictures were available of the M4 & the grill stopped me. Bought the Z4 on lease to see how it would play out. As it happened to my eye in real life & a dark color I think its very aggressive. Went from Little Piggy to a killer pig known as the "Hell Pig". That said liked the Z4M40 so much it went from my lease & sell group to the long term keepers.

Initially I wasn't that interested in a C8 on account of the automatic only drivetrain. Looked at one up close and found the exterior to be really busy and not in a good way. It's hard to argue with Corvette performance & value for money though.
Ended up spending a lot of time looking at used C7s before I got my Z4, roughly 18-24 months ago, and the manual C7s were scarcer and seemed to command a bit of a premium. I can't tell you how many times I thought I'd found a good deal on a Z41, LT2/LT3 car with low miles only to discover it had an automatic transmission. Clean, low mile LT2+ 2017/2018 C7 Z06s were asking in the 90k + range on Autotrader. Ultimately decided I didn't really want a 650hp car that would probably average mileage similar to my full-size truck, especially since I was thinking that I'd keep this convertible for at least 10 years and didn't want to give any more thought to fuel costs than I do with any motorcycle I've ever owned. The Z4 offers as much or more performance than I can reasonably use on the street as it is - modern cars are just so much better than the cars I grew up driving that chasing specs seems pointless beyond bench racing/bragging rights. Expect that transmission based premium price difference will persist in the used Corvette market, but not at the crazy high asking prices of 2021 and 2022. |

I’m on the Corvette forums, you will not find many people lamenting the lack of a manual C8. People just don’t miss manuals in these high performance cars anymore.
Most owners say the C8 is such a leap over the C7, no missing the manual. |

I’m not a fan of the C8 styling. The car itself is amazing, but it’s completely over-styled, and probably won’t age well.

Yeah I agree that the exterior is overdone IMO. I do like the interior cockpit design though.

Supply and demand will determine depreciation, at least short term. A manual Z4 in itself will not affect current Z4 prices, but personally, I think there will be a glut of current Z4s fromniwners that want to get a newer model that is a manual, and will trade/sell theirs. Depending on what happens, it might be enough to move me to an M40i, as I admit, with the amazingn abilities of rhe current 8sp, I am done with manuals!

This goes back to the fact that ever since it was first introduced I have never seen an advertisement in any type of media for the Z4.

I don’t see much advertising of sports cars in general. They either sell themselves or not. When the C8 debuted sure big time extravaganza, ND Miata had Duran Duran perform a concert as it was unveiled. But post debut, it’s all about influencers reviewing the cars it seems as car magazines have lost readers.
On TV it’s all commercials for the product that moves (SUV’s) |
