Replace oil pan M40i $2900?
A construction truck dropped a large rock on the roadway near my home. I pulled out behind a pickup that was following a car. I think the first car rolled the rock because the truck slammed on its brakes but I am not sure. Regardless, I drove over it and caused $4400 damage under my car. The rock was low enough that it cleared the front of the car. The only part of the estimate that shocked me was the $2900 oil pan replacement. Does anyone know if that is reasonable? Thanks

Sure sounds excessive to me. Call around to some independent BMW shops for quotes.

It sounds high but figure $950 (from what I see online) for the part, $200 per hour of labor, if its a 5 hour job? to remove/lift the engine and put it back and figure $150 for the requisite dealer oil change I'd figure it should cost $2100. Maybe the time or labor rate is higher? Also there are probably some parts I didn't consider like gaskets.
Is it covered under your collision policy? I had a similar event happen to a '80 Camaro I had, I was following a pickup carrying car parts on the LIE it hit a bump and a transmission fell out of the bed, the tailgate was down, and I had no out to change lanes and hit it with my transmission which caused the case to crack open, it was covered under collision. Really need to check your insurance. 2018 M440. Similar event. Jack shaft came off a dump truck & wound up under my car.
Cleared the front body panels but took out the steering, oil pan, some under panels & 8ZF transmission. Insurance paid $18,000+ in repairs at a BMW dealers own body shop. Had no out of pocket

Thanks all,
Yes my insurance will cover it although with a $500 deductible I thought I would just cover it rather than file a claim. I guess not. Sadly the one damaged brace has to be ordered from Germany so instead of being covered in my garage it will be sitting on the dealer lot in northern indiana for who knows how long. |

I thought about having it towed back to my garage (40 miles) but oil needs to be added every time it is started so the risk of someone failing to do that increases with every move. Also IMHO any time a sports car is loaded on a flat bed, strapped down and then unloaded there is a chance of scraping or other damage. There is no good solution.
