With bimmercode takes 5 minutes to do it.
You will need an obd adapter and the app on your phone. You can code many other options.

Thank you, can you tell me which is the most cost effective OBD that will work with Android?

I use an iphone with a obdlink mx+
If you want to use android check these bimmercode certified adapters. Mine uses bluetooth and not a single problem. https://bimmercode.app/adapters/

I found that for the writing of this ECU is after the car is running and you select the change to remember autostart setting, I had to turn the engine off for the ECU to code. Otherwise I got an error message unable to write ECU

For the adapter, the OBDLink LX for G series is what I got. The MX and MX+ are a waste of money for the BMW as they have features for Ford and GM. If you have a Ford or GM then those would be useful. Otherwise, the added features wont do anything for the BMW

OBDlink mx+ works perfect with bimmercode and BMW g29 and it is on the app approved OBD's for iphone.
I don't see the LX listed in the app valid adapters for iphone. Only for Android.
By the way, LX is almost half price than MX. Good for android users.

I would use the MHD wifi version. Superfast connection Works great with bimmercode and as a bonus you can tune your car with MHD software. Although tuning not so simple in the USA

Dont forget to code off start screen
Code "video in motion" so you can watch videos while driving. Also screen mirror while driving
Code off the annoying volume pop up
Many others

According to the instruction, G series should use diagnostic mode, push start button for 3 times WITHOUT pushing the brake. Engine will not turn on.

I think OBDLink MX is the best because all function in Bimmercode can be used.

Thanks for the tip on Diagnostic mode

All my functions in Bimmercode work. I was told that FOR BMW the LX and MX function exactly the same. The MX has capabilities to work on other vehicles. If it had more capability I would have spent the extra $40 and gotten the MX. I don't mind spending money for capability, but I see no reason to just throw it away

On the OBDII site the specs on the LX and MX are pretty much the same with respect to OBDII except on the MX page it states " plus advanced Ford & GM vehicle networks (MS-CAN and SW-CAN). "

on the LX page it says "Consider purchasing MX+ if you need access to the proprietary Ford & GM vehicle networks (MS-CAN and SW-CAN) in addition to the standard OBD-II protocols."

so if you are only using it on a BMW, the functionality is the same except a $40 price difference

Don't be scared. It is pretty easy

The steps are fairly easy

You first read the ECUs

You go in and change settings. Nothing really happens until you tell it to update the ECU

There are multiple ECUs so you are only writing one at a time

You can always go back in and change the ECU setting

Does it give fault code explanations with BMW service recommendations? More interested in that access than coding.

Does this require the 3 button push of start/stop?

I havent had any faults to read. The Bimmercode description seems to be about coding

However, you first have to synch the OBD device with the OBD Link APP that is free with the adapter before starting Bimmercode

https://www.obdlink.com/obd-apps/obdlink-app/

reading that it will give you codes and descriptions, but I don't see anything about recommended service
