Other than a good wash like you said, I went over the dry car carefully with a microfiber cloth to look for and feel for any dirty or rough areas. It is easier to feel a problem that actually see it.

There were only a few areas that needed attention. One spot I used a clay bar to pull out some contaminates. Nothing really significant.

The important thing, I think, is to apply the ceramic as soon as possible. I started literally the day I brought it home, getting it ready.

Good luck, follow product directions exactly, and enjoy your ride!

The picture does not do it justice... it actually looks wet.

If you don't mind spending a bit of money, have a professional do it. They will decontaminate the paint and polish it where needed. Here's the thread showing my Z4 with before and after pictures. This was professionally done just after I got the car. The A pillars and side mirrors already had a lot of swirl. The purple reaction is from an iron decontamination solution. The last thing you want to do is seal in scratches/swirl with a ceramic coating or apply it wrong.

Not having a lot of stamina in my old age nor wishing to shell out $200 for products I'd only use once I paid a mobile detailer $150 to wash, clay and de-iron my X5 in my drive. Car was about 6 months old but he replied when asked that it was best to prep well including a de-iron job. Detailer used the Optimum brand.

Before I applied the CQuartz my wife would wipe down the clean car with a diluted solution of 70% Iso. alcohol changing out small cloths often. This insures any and all "stuff" including any residual petrol products is off your paint.

Work in small areas at a time. Stuff goes on and comes off easily. I spent hours looking at video tests on line and CQuartz beat most if not all with some videos comparing up to 30 products over a long time of weather exposure torture of heat, rain, etc.

2 coatings I'll apply on a new Z4 are CQuartz and a ceramic leather coating on the seats and trim. If you choose to seal the seats make sure and vacuum well first. After research I settled on this one. https://gyeonquartz.com/product/leather-shield/

Also bought the Gyeon Mild leather cleaner.

No reason to pay a mortgage to a "pro" to prep the car for coating.

Thanks for this info. I just got a quote from a place in Boston for $1,499 to get the Z4 prepped and ceramic coating....

I'm going to try and go your path and hire someone to prep.

The complete ceramic coating on mine was $1300 at XPEL in Austin.

That seems to be the going rate. I spent more ($4500) and had paint protection film applied to the front bumper, headlights, a pillars, side skirts, side mirrors, rear quarter and full hood. I would NEVER have the dealership do any of these services. My dealership sometimes ceramic coats their cars and they leave minor scratches/swirl under the coating. That would not be acceptable to me.

FWIW I applied 2 coats on areas that face front - grille, bumper, side mirrors, pillars, etc. I applied the 2nd coat the day after the first.

Stuff is tough. I accidentally smeared some on a window. Only a polish will take it off.

After a few days of rain I noticed my car covered in brown "flecks".
You can hardly feel them running your hand over the paintwork and after washing the car - they don't shift.

I took it to a local detailer who called it "vliegroest" - not sure what that is in English.

So the car is going in on Wednesday for a full chemical wash, wax and ceramic coating. Cannot wait to see it !

That's iron contamination and happens to most cars during transport or just general driving. A little fleck of iron gets stuck in the paint finish and begins to rust, turning brown. Pro detailers know how to take care of it. You can google for more information.

Yep, and another reason why my detailer who prepped my X5 for my impending CQuartz application insisted on doing an iron de-contamination even though the car was new.

What is the correct method to do minor clean-up and detailing on a ceramic coating? I the past I've used a quick detailer spray and microfiber towel. Is that still OK for ceramic?

Sorry, read it too fast but as mentioned in other posts this shampoo is a miracle. Super concentrated, leaves a beautiful slippery finish that lasts. https://www.amazon.com/CarPro-Reset-.../dp/B00MLG4CX2
