Sorry everyone, I don't trust the numbers from Canada. Every site seems to be reporting different numbers.

https://carfigures.com/canada-market...ar-sales-table
2019- 210
2020- 182

https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/bmw-z4-sales-figures/
2019- 1,620
2020- 1,345

I tired looking at Toyota & BMW CA press release and couldn't find much.

Even the BMW USA press release is slight off from the goodcarbadcar but its only like by 100 units, so that's not too big of a deal IMO.

Edited: Someone just shared this link, but maybe the differences is because BMW inflated their sale numbers?

Yep. We picked up the 21 Supra back in November. I wanted a Z4, contacted my dealer, and they had no allocations and no timeframe they'd recieve one. We've had 8 or so BMWs in the last 14 years; this is the first Toyota I've ever bought. Local dealer had one incoming, and it was in my driveway within a week. The wife says it was just a BMW with a $20k discount.

Still love my Bimmers. Our other daily is a 17 440i. Supra is a fine automobile. The one thing I really appreciated in buying the Supra (as a long-time BMW buyer) was the lack of nickel-and-diming on accessories. The 3.0 Premium version of the Supra basically comes already loaded, including about $15k in options that BMW would charge separately for. There's only one option available, the "driver-assistance" package, which gives you the complete suite of Safety Tech. I really wish BMW would do this, honestly.

You can't add $15K in options for a Z4 M40i. There's 2 options which are driving assistance and the Premium package and the price is around $5k Cdn. All the other options come standard as part of the M Performance package.

Prices in Europe (Spain) as today.
Dollar/Euro 1.21$ for 1€

Paid cash, with taxes etc included

Z4 30 i full equipped 90.000$
Z4 30 i base 77.000$
Z4 m40 full equipped 99.000$
Z4 m40 base 87.000$

Z4 30 i full equipped is more expensive than a Z4 m40 base.

One of the reasons I wanted to get an order in quick. The dollar is losing value against the Euro. I know BMW hedges against currency fluctuations but with the U.S. Federal Reserve pushing for inflation I could imagine prices starting to climb.

When I went to the Christmas markets in Germany in 2019 I was exchanging $1.10 for each Euro. It was almost at parity to spending a buck in Florida as we had a 7% sales tax in Duval at the time. It was a completely different experience from the one I had in 2008 when each Euro cost alomost $1.60.

I own a Z4 and love it. But, demand is non existent here in Canada and I think resale value will tank as a result.

Rob
dont agree on resale value. my previous was a 2007 interlagos blue Mcoupe (hardtop z4). only 3132 made if i remember the number correctly and it sold for over 10K blue book as lots of people looking for this car and almost none out there. not that that will be true here but low demand and small numbers I dont think will necessarily equate with tanking value. fingers crossed!

I agree with you. I don't really care about resale as I have no intention of selling my Z4 anytime in the next 5-7 years but I think you are correct. You want to talk about depreciation?....my Jaguar went from an MSRP of $124,000 to a trade in value of $65,000 in 5 years with only 20,000 kms on it.

The numbers from carfigures.com make a lot more sense to me than the much higher goodcarbadcar numbers. Canada while having a similar culture only has 11% the population of the US. In addition, Canada has a colder environment on average compared to the US so one should expect that to effect sales. Finally, the Supra sales shown by goodcarbadcar do make sense and are consistent with carfigures and US sales.

If we take both those aspects into account, the carfigures.com numbers make a lot more sense than the goodcarbadcar numbers.

Different buyers

People dont cross shop the Supra and the Z4. The consumer data shows that. Completely different cars with a common engine. I waited to buy the first G29 Z4 and never once went to a Toyota store to even look at a Supra. One is a beautiful design and a perfect car for a spirited ride on a sunny day. The other is a Supra.

With that said:

Canada

Z4
2019: 1,620
2020: 1,345
Total: 2,965

Supra
2019: 252
2020: 333
Total: 585

Total North America Sales

Supra
US (8,771) + Canada (585) = 9,356

Z4
US (5,305) + Canada (2,965) = 8,270

Where one does better in X, it's kinda off set by Y.

I have a different viewpoint. Some people like convertibles and others don't.

I have driven a convertible (one BMW 325i, two Mercedes- CLK430 & CLK500) since 1994. My last hardtop was a 1991 325i and I would never drive a hardtop coupe again after experiencing the wind blowing in my face.

What I find interesting is the ratio of Z4 to Supra sales in the US compared to Europe. They are completely flipped.

I actually did cross shop both cars. I wasn’t a convertible fan but the interior won me over. Also I got a way better deal on a more expensive car so it was a no brainer.

In my opinion, the Z4's interior design gets a 9 out of 10. It would have been a perfect 10 if they had figured out a better location for the cup holders.

Concur, the Z4 interior is leaps and bounds better than the Supra.

I remember more of the respected reviewers being partial to the Supra. Commonality goes beyond the engine. Difference beyond being a coupe (which I'd prefer) but I've been with German brands for over 30 years and a Japanese badge with iD6 was not sexy to me at this price point. I'd be very interested in the new 86 on a smaller budget.

Interesting to note that since the 10 months have elapsed since this thread was started that current pricing indicates I could actually sell my Z4 for more than I paid for it. .....not often you see negative depreciation.

Agreed but you can still keep half of it done and have your drink it the cup holder. Not so much for the poor passenger though.

My wife who is my co-pilot is a all or nothing type of person.

Instead of using the poorly designed cup holder she puts her bottles in the small mesh storage area on her side of the center console. I always remind her to make sure that the bottle cap is screwed on tightly!
